So I gotta yell about something, and that something is the absolutely stunning @tokoyamizine I just got today.
I’m honestly just… absolutely floored by this project, as a customer and as a fellow zine curator. Their social media presence alone has been a delight the entire time, but what’s really blowing my mind is how perfectthe presentation has been on this project. The amount of above and beyond effort that has gone into this thing is just absolutely incredible. The black bubble mailer? Inspired. The board game? Delightful. I’m honestly very surprised by the amount of stuff I got for the amount of dollars I paid, and it’s all super quality.
What knocked it over the top for me was the formatting of the zine itself, though. I wanna buy the format person a drink. I’ve never really been a fan of fic in zines before this - despite being a fic writer myself. I’ve always preferred the format of ao3 and the ability to give direct feedback to writers - and most fic in zines winds up being a wall of plain text that almost feels like it’s interruptingthe illustrations. (It’s a huge challenge to write a satisfying fic that’s also brief enough to be reasonably put to print - and it’s a tall order to ask of your fic writers, giving them a pretty severe character limit but asking their work to replace five or six illustrators work in terms of space.) But Revelry in the Dark did it right, y’all. They appear to have paired writers with illustrators to make the best use of the medium, and they formatted it in a super visually appealing way. They also had writers do poetryand like what a punchy, in-theme way to maximize the effectiveness of your page space.
Oh did I mention they put games in this b*tch? Because they put games in this b*tch. Games. Plural. Goodgames.
And cosplay too. because why the f*ck not.
