when love changes,
we don’t speak of love
like that

love is the inclusion
of every emotion,
it can pit in despair
spiral with confusion
wreak of resentment
burn hot like fire

but we don’t speak of love
like that

it can burn bridges
and build bridges
simultaneously
it’s the fork in the road
a right turn wrapped with certainty
go left for unwavering faith, they say

but we don’t speak of love
like that

where does love go
when we’ve come to forks and bridges
does it need to go anywhere at all?
the root of love remains
no matter the twists and turns
shakes and rattles

can we speak of love like that?
it can grow and change and renew
why not let it harden us for a time
so that we know how it feels to be soft
because love is the inclusion
of every emotion

even if we don’t speak of love
