LIVE

Hi guys, I hope you are having a great [Insert time of day you are reading this]. I’m really proud of this one and I hope you all like it as much as I do. Without further ado:

It takes a mere 60 seconds for an adult to drown. One minute for the water to claim a life. And when you are watching the person you love drown helplessly, it feels like literal hell. Lucifer would know as he was forced to do so at gunpoint after having already been shot once.

How did this all happen?

It was a case that started the same as every other case, with a dead body. It was a drowning with foul play involved. During the investigation, another drowning victim was discovered. Long story short, they were both on the same swim team in high school. After interviewing other kids on that swim team, you had figured out who the killer was and who his final target was. The killer was a kid who almost drowned when three of the swimmers took him out in a lake and flipped his kayak thinking it was funny that he couldn’t swim. His name was Ryan, and four years later, he was getting his revenge.

He was planning to strike again, this time at the high school gym. You were able to intercept his intended victim and cautiously went into the gym, hoping to catch him off guard. What you weren’t expecting was for him to have an accomplice who was armed.

“LAPD, Put the gun down,” you ordered.

“I don’t think so Detective, put yours down or I’ll shoot your partner over there,” he replied.

“Come on Ryan, I get why you are doing this. You wanted them to feel what you felt that night. What they did to you was cruel. I wish I could change that, but I can’t. But if you have your friend put the gun down, we can all walk out of here tonight,” you tried to reason.

“Have you ever drowned detective? Did you know that you don’t actually inhale until right before you blackout? The instinct to not let water in is so strong that you won’t until you can’t handle the excruciating pain from the pressure in your head. You try to fight it, but really it’s when you let it in that the pain goes away,” he explained.

“That night at the lake wasn’t the first time I drowned and they knew that. I was terrified of the water, but I thought they were my friends. And when they flipped me they just watched and laughed. Then they left me there to die,” he growled.

“I’m so sorry that you had to go through that Ryan, I really am. But we need him to put the gun down so no one gets hurt,” you replied.

“You’re just like them. You’re just another stupid popular kid, you don’t even see me,” he shouted and then redirected his attention to his friend, “Shoot him,”

“Wait,” you yelled putting your gun down. “My gun is down, you are in charge of this situation. Tell me, Ryan, what do you want to happen next?”

“Hmmm. Come over here,” he ordered. You took a deep breath and did so overly aware of Lucifer watching worriedly.

“Take off your vest,” he demanded and you did so.

“You don’t have to do this,” you tried. His response was hitting you across the face which caused Lucifer to lunge in your direction and caused Ryan’s friend to shoot him in the abdomen. You watched as the blood seeped through his shirt.

“Okay what next?” you gulped tears running down your cheeks.

“Stand still,” he said as he strapped weights to you. You watched Lucifer who was leaning against the wall grimacing from the pain. You had a plan, but it was absolutely bonkers and absolutely last case scenario.

“Okay now, jump in,” Ryan ordered.

“What?!”

“Do it or he’ll shoot your friend again, in the head this time,” he said.

“How do I know you won’t shoot him again after I jump?” you asked.

“I give you my word,” he said, not that that meant anything.

“Detective, you can’t actually be considering this?” Lucifer tried to reason.

“Do it now,” Ryan demanded.

“I’m sorry,” you said to Lucifer before jumping in.

The weights pulled you down to the bottom of the deep end. You flailed and fought against it with everything you had. But it was no use, eventually, you gave in to the pain and let go.

Lucifer was outraged as he watched you go under the water. He wanted to jump in and save you but instead was forced to watch it happen. When the water stilled he wanted to cry out but refrained. He knew that you were dead because he was healing.

In an instant, his sadness for you turned to anger. He walked towards Ryan’s friend who was firing repeatedly at him and slammed him back into the wall hard enough to knock him out.

“What? How? I-I don’t-What are you?” Ryan questioned as he edged backwards in fear.

“I am the devil. And the amount of water you will be surrounded with in hell,” he said flashing his eyes before he knocked him out as well.

He didn’t waste another second and dove underwater. He went to your lifeless form and broke off the chains allowing them to sink to the bottom with the weights. He then struggled slightly to lift you out of the water jumping out and starting CPR.

“Come on Y/n,” he said as he did chest compressions before pausing to give you mouth to mouth.

“Come back to me,” he yelled as he started the second round of chest compressions. He knew that he needed to call an ambulance, but he also couldn’t stop what he was doing.

“Come on, come on,” he said frantically as he started the third round “Please Y/n” he begged.

It was then that you started coughing up water and Lucifer pulled you up into a sitting position pulling out his phone to call for backup.

“Are you okay?” you asked pulling up his shirt as he hung up.

“You die and your first question is if I’m alright?” he laughed kissing your forehead.

“I’m fine,” he added as you were looking at him expectantly, “Are you okay?”

“I’m doing great for someone who just drowned,” you joked.

“Back-up is on the way, then we can get out of here,” he added wrapping his arms around you ignoring the fact that you were both soaking wet.

It was Dan who came in first, “Really guys, swimming on the job?” he joked and Lucifer shot him a death glare. Ryan and his friend were carried out and placed in the back of squad cars. Lucifer stood up and helped you to your feet. Your body was on fire and he had to support the majority of your weight as he escorted you out to the ambulance.

They checked you over and warned you that you weren’t entirely out of the water yet. They gave Lucifer a list of symptoms to look for over the next 24 hours and extinguished any thought you had of going to work the next day.

After what felt like forever, you were back in the passenger’s seat of Lucifer’s car. The wind making it freezing as you rode back to LUX. You then made a beeline for the guestroom shower wanting to feel warmth again. Lucifer was going to offer to shower with you, but he figured that you had been through enough for one night. Instead, he took his own shower and made you some tea and pouring himself a strong drink. He had come far to close to losing you.

When you came out of the shower Lucifer met you with the warm tea in his hand, which you graciously accepted. You climbed into bed and laid with your head on Lucifer’s chest just focusing on the steady rise and fall along with the sound of his heart beating. You had come far too close to losing him.

The next day Lucifer hardly let you leave the bed. He insisted on having a proper day off and catered to your every desire. The two of you watched TV together and spent the day in, which was a nice change of pace all things considered.

Why couldn’t one case just be open and shut easy? This is what was running through your mind as you were running after your latest killer. The two of you maneuvering through a construction zone. Luckily, you were not afraid of heights because that would have been a serious problem. You wondered how far off Lucifer was, secretly hoping that he’d show up to intervene sooner than later.

You were closing in when your phone started ringing. You looked down for a split second, which was long enough for you to lose sight of the killer. You continued walking cautiously, “Graham, it’s over, there is nowhere left to run. Just turn yourself in,” you advised moving closer.

That is when he came up from behind you and shoved you towards the edge. The two of you struggled against each other. You were able to hear voices nearing you and apparently he did as well as he pulled you up near the edge and held you by the throat with your sidearm forced against the side of your head.

“Don’t come any closer or I’ll shoot her, I swear I’ll do it,” he yelled desperately.

“Okay Graham, just calm down. We don’t want anyone to get hurt here,” Dan answered calmly edging just into your line of sight.

“I can’t go to jail, I can’t,” Graham urged.

You were analyzing the situation trying to figure a way out of it. There was no way that you were disarming him, the two of you were too close to the edge for you to try any physical maneuvers. He was already becoming unstable which meant he was becoming less and less unpredictable. While realizing the bleakness of it all, you just wished that Lucifer was there.

“Graham, I need you to let go of the detective. Do that and we can talk about this, I promise,” Dan tried to reason.

“I-I can’t. Oh God, how did this happen? I didn’t mean for this- This isn’t me,” Graham spiraled, his grip on your neck tightening, making it harder to breath. It was then that you noticed Lucifer, you could see the worry in his eyes as he assessed what was going on.

“Graham, it’s going to be okay. Look at me, no gun, I’m not going to hurt you,” he tried, taking a step towards the two of you. Graham watched him, tears running down his face as he realized for the first time how screwed he actually was.

“You’ve got the gun, you have the power. Just let the detective go,” he coaxed not daring to break eye contact for even a second. Graham started to release his grip on you, at least enough that you could breathe freely.

“That’s it Graham, just release the Detective,” he repeated calmly taking another step towards the two of you.

That was all it took to set Graham off. He whispered, “I’m sorry,” before shoving you over the edge and making a run for it. He made it three steps before Dan shot him in the shoulder and two of the officers cuffed him.

Lucifer watched as it happened lunging towards you, but he wasn’t fast enough. He screamed your name and then sprinted down to where you were absolutely terrified that he had lost you. When he made his way down, the sight made him want to throw up. Your body was still, too still. There was blood that he couldn’t place. The entire thing looked surreal. He checked for your pulse and put his ear to your mouth listening for your breathing. All the while praying to his father that it was there and that you weren’t —-.

Dan came close behind him calling for the medics and warning Lucifer not to move you. Lucifer was internally freaking out to the point that he barely noticed him. All that he could focus on was you. He had to be pulled away when the medics arrived and couldn’t even focus on the words they were saying. He just watched them swarm around you hooking up monitors and applying braces. He was at a complete loss. He didn’t take his eyes off of you once until they loaded you into the ambulance.

“Sir! Are you riding with?” one of the medics asked.

“Wh-what?” Lucifer asked snapping out of it.

“Are you riding with?” she repeated.

“Yes,” he said before climbing in with you.

“No response,” “Glasgow Coma 6”, “Potential Hemorrhage,”

Lucifer heard the words and reached for your hand willing you to be okay. You  arrived to the hospital and were rolled away frantically by a plethera of nurses and doctors. Lucifer was left standing in the hallway as you were taken to the trauma wing. There were tears in his eyes as he watched you disappear out of sight. To those who saw him, he looked like a lost puppy whose bone was just stolen.

Dan and Ella rushed to the hospital, Ella called Maze who called Linda who called Amenadiel. Everyone arrived separately and tried to reassure Lucifer that everything was going to be fine, but he wouldn’t believe them until you were back in his arms and he could hear your laugh.

After what felt like an eternity later, your doctor finally came out.

“Is anyone here for Miss Y/f/n Y/l/n?” she asked.

“I’m her boyfriend and partner,” Lucifer said as he stood up. The others also came over to hear what was going on.

“Her injuries were more severe than we first thought. We were able to alleviate the pressure and stop the bleeding in her brain. She was placed in a medically induced coma to allow the inflammation to go down. We won’t know the full extent of her condition until she is awake. She’s quite lucky to even be alive,” the doctor explained.

“Can we see her?” Maze asked.

“She’s in the ICU right now and can’t have visitors. In the morning, we will be moving her to a private room and reducing her sedatives. You should all go home and get some rest and come back then,” she answered before excusing herself back to work.

Everyone was a little disheartened by the news, but no one more than Lucifer. “Lucky to even be alive,” he repeated in disbelief. If only he would have got there sooner, maybe this could have all been prevented.

“But she is, and that is what is important brother. She will be fine, Y/n is strong. You know that,” Amenadiel reassured resting a hand on his shoulder.

“Yeah, Y/n is one of the strongest humans I know,” Maze added.

“I just wish-” Lucifer started.

“Don’t do that. Don’t blame yourself for this. Don’t think about what you would do differently. It’s not healthy,” Linda interrupted.

“I can’t help it,” he said staring off and replaying the scene in his head again.

“You should all go home, I will stay with Luci and make sure everything is okay,” Amenadiel spoke.

“I’m not leaving,” Maze stated sitting down next to Lucifer.

Linda, Dan, and Ella reluctantly left knowing that there wasn’t anything that they’d be able to do until morning anyways.

It was a long night, but none of the celestial beings moved from their seats. They just sat and waited. The small talk didn’t last long before a comfortable silence took over. Maze and Amenadiel were just as worried about Lucifer as they were you. They knew that he would be more than devastated if something happened to you.

It wasn’t until 10 am the next day that the nurse came and led Lucifer back to your room. He paused for a moment outside your door. He knew that once he opened it he would have to face reality and there would be no turning back. He took a deep breath and opened the door.

There you were, a hospital gown where your uniform had been. A bandage secured firmly around your head and a tube that was allowing you to breath sticking out of your throat. You looked helpless which was not something Lucifer had seen before.

He felt awkward and out of place, not knowing what he should do exactly. He was nervous, which didn’t really make sense to him considering you were unconscious. It was all too much for him, seeing you like that. He took a seat beside you and took your hand, but even that felt off. He wanted to be there for you, but he didn’t know how to be.

Everyone else trickled in and out, all talking to you. Dan explained that Graham was locked up for good and how the cases were waiting for you whenever you were ready. Ella had brought in a bag of your clothes from Lux and explained how she made sure that your car made it back from the scene. Maze lovingly threatened you. And Amenadiel wished you well. Finally, it was just Linda and Lucifer in your room.

“Why do they do that?” he asked staring at your hand.

“Why do they do what?” she asked.

“Why do they all talk to her like there is nothing wrong?”

“Well, some people have to normalize situations in order to cope. It is also believed that coma patients are aware of their surroundings. Have you not talked to her?” she asked.

“I don’t even know what to say,” he answered.

“Maybe it would help if you close your eyes and pretend that the two of you were back at LUX? Just a normal day. I’ll give you the room,” she replied, placing her hand on his shoulder.

He sat there for a minute, just thinking before he gave in and tried it, closing his eyes. “Wow, this is absurd. Me. Lucifer Morningstar at a loss for words,” he joked.

“I don’t know what to say. Linda said to close my eyes and pretend this is a conversation between us at LUX. Which I am, but you wouldn’t know that because you are unconscious. I don’t know how I am supposed to pretend that everything is okay when we are where we are. It’s my fault, we shouldn’t have split up. I just- and when I saw him with a gun to your head. But then I watched you fall and I thought you were-,” he revealed so caught up in the moment he hadn’t even noticed you squeezing his hand.

You tried to say something and started freaking out still not entirely aware of the fact that you were intubated. The sudden change in your stats not only caught Lucifer’s attention, a look of relief and worry taking over his face, but also caught the attention of the nurses who rushed in and forced him out.

After what felt like an eternity, he was allowed back in your room. You were propped up more, breathing on your own, clearly worn out. The nurse informed Lucifer that you were mostly fine, and just needed to take it easy and rest. Overtaken by the good news, he pulled her into a hug.

“Wow, you moved on already,” he heard you joke softly. His chest felt like it was going to burst with relief.

“Come now Darling, you know no one will ever replace you,” he said smoothly as he went to your side, “how are you feeling?”

“Better now that you are here.”

“Well, I do tend to have that affect in people,” he smiled.

“Graham?”

“In custody. He will be locked up for the rest of his life. He’s lucky you’re okay otherwise that would have been the least of his problems.”

“Lucifer…”

“Don’t Lucifer me, if not me, Maize would have taken care of him. He almost–” but Lucifer couldn’t finish that thought.

“But he didn’t. And I’m fine. See,” you interrupted doing small jazz hands at the end.

“I love you, you know that?”

“Well I would hope so at this point,” you laughed before adding, “I love you too Lucifer.”

“Are you sure there isn’t anything you need? Anything I can get you?”

“No, I have everything I need right here,” you said through a new wave of exhaustion.

Lucifer, picking up on this, replied softly, “Get some rest, I’ll be right here when you wake up.”
