‘Reign’ Recap: Showdown Between Mary and Lola

This week on Reign, a million things happen at once because everyone in the French court is crazy good at multitasking. There’s a fight, a christening, a pregnancy announcement, a miscarriage, a sexy dance, a sexy sex scene, a murder, a suicide, and ghosts. The real mystery of this episode doesn’t revolve around whether the riders are men or demons from the underworld, but how in the world everyone manages to fit so much into their day.

‘Reign’ is Ditching the Love Triangle: 5 Reasons it’s Good for the Show  Reign, th

‘Reign’ is Ditching the Love Triangle: 5 Reasons it’s Good for the Show

Reign, the CW’s newly popular period drama, is hurtling toward its first season finale with high velocity. In fact, unceasing forward momentum has become a hallmark of Reign’s charming, addictive, and insane first season.

So it shouldn’t exactly have come as a surprise when executive producer Laurie McCarthy told TVLine the show planned to axe it’s major love triangle. Since the show premiered (and even before, on the promotional posters) the love triangle between the young Mary, Queen of Scots, her betrothed Prince Francis and his bastard brother Bash has been front and center.

The first half of the season saw the love triangle drive much of the plot, as Mary hoped to save Francis from a fate foreseen by Nostradamus by marrying Bash instead. Yet after Mary ultimately married Francis, and Bash got unceremoniously stuck with Kenna, the show has seemingly hit the brakes on the big love triangle.
According to McCarthy, this is not only by design, but will continue going forward. Talking about Mary and Bash to TVLine, McCarthy stated: “There will always be a lingering thing between them, but [Kenna] is going to find herself falling for Bash, and she’s going to be successful in getting him to fall for her. Our lives have chapters. People move on.”
This is huge news, not only for those heartbroken Mary and Bash fans, but more generally for the outlook of the show. In fact, I think it’s very positive news for Reign’s future. Here’s why:

21 Things ‘Reign’ Got Right and Wrong in Season 2Reign’s second season just end

21 Things ‘Reign’ Got Right and Wrong in Season 2

Reign’s second season just ended with a bang, capping off an unfortunately uneven sophomore outing. The show has been renewed for a third season, thankfully, which means there is still time for the show to course correct and learn from some of its mistakes.

Below is a completely unscientific list of some of the best and worst things about Reign’s second season. Obviously, your mileage may vary with these selections.

‘Reign’ Recap: Bash Doesn’t Know He’s in Grave Danger

This episode on Reign, the French Court find the weakest excuse yet to throw an opulent party, the King of Navarre stops by to extort money for more Eyes Wide Shut-style orgies and also to feed refugees (but mostly for orgies), and secrets and alliances are uncovered that could put multiple people in very grave danger.

“Sins of the Past,” finds our French royals striving to get beyond the past with varying levels of success. Bash finally decides to forgive Kenna after befriending a hot Greek zombie, while Mary decides a reunion with Francis is just too hard considering everything that’s happened.

‘Reign’ Recap: Francis and Conde Fight Over Mary’s Heart

I really love the way Reign highlights these power differentials without victimizing the women or undercutting their strength. This is just the world they live in, and they navigate in their constrained circumstances as best they can. It makes them tough and strong, and it makes the women of Reign pragmatic and resilient in ways the male characters on this show never really need to be.

Conde and Francis can fight over Mary like giant man babies, but it’ll always be Mary’s reputation at risk, and it’ll always be her and her ladies who have to clean up the mess.

‘Reign’ Recap: Did the Show Go Too Far with Mary’s Assault?  Rape scenes on televi

‘Reign’ Recap: Did the Show Go Too Far with Mary’s Assault?

Rape scenes on television are extremely tricky things because it’s such a sensitive topic. Reign has skirted around the topic of sexual violence several times before (Mary was in fact nearly raped in the show’s pilot) so I’m not sure why I was so shocked by the events of this episode. The real Mary Queen of Scots might have been assaulted, although that’s a messy and complicated story, and it would have occurred long after her time with Francis.
So it’s not exactly like the writers had their hands tied by historical facts. This storyline was a deliberate choice on their parts and at this point I have no idea if the storyline they’ve set in motion will justify that scene.
Unfortunately, too many shows throw rape storylines into the mix only for the shock factor. Shows will skirt away from the emotional repercussions, use it as a device to inject drama, or even forget to focus on the victim. Reignis going to have to do some work to justify why this particular storyline needed to happen. It will be more than distasteful if it’s only used to create another barrier between Francis and Mary.
Kane’s performance can only take them so far, after that the show has to create a compelling and sensitive narrative around this horrible assault. I’m not sure Reign should have gone to such a dark place. I’m not sure if they’ll stick the landing. I understand and give somewhat more leeway to historical shows, since sexual violence was even more prevalent than it is now, and I’m not sure ignoring that fact is the right way to go either. However, I’m definitely sure I would have preferred for the show to go in a different direction instead.
