Mata Nui Dot Mosaic

There’sthisreally cool rebuild of the world map mosaic set, but that set is $350so I got a $4 canvas and painted it manually, because I’ve really wanted something of Mata Nui to put on my wall recently and I though the design looked cool. It took like a day and a half to paint, wasn’t too hard, the most annoying part was my phone running out of battery or the website crashing the web browser.

Old stuff

Some old Bionicle stuff I’ve made. And by old I mean 2002.

I made this for a school project. I can’t remember what the project was.

I also had plans of making a set scale model, then I did the math and found out it would be bigger than my town…

I’ve improved a tiny bit in 19 years…maybe.

Mata Nui Great Spirit Robot ortho renders

Did some orthographic renders of the Great Spirit Robot to show off some of the detail. I also put the model up for download here if anyone is interested in seeing it in detail. It’s untextured though since that made the file too large.

And textured version.

Great Spirit Robot

Finally finished getting this all rusty so I did a full render of it. Background is a picture of a sunset I took a few years ago.

Makuta Version

Mata Nui - Great Spirit Robot

Spent the past week making a model of the Great Spirit Robot from Bionicle.

It was quite hard as there were very few good quality references of it. The front, side, and back 3 quarters are quite low quality and the model isn’t even finished in some of them (Notice the mismatched wrists and different arm lengths in the front shot, and the missing pistons in the shoulders). And the videos it apeared in are over a decade old at this point and not super high quality, also the best one is all rusty and cool looking and the lighting is dark from being at sunset so it makes it very hard to pick out specific details.

Making it went super quick really, at the start when you have nothing but some blury pictures it’s quite daunting but once you get a few things layed out it can build from there. The most exhausting part was the rigging, particularly for the ankles. There’s 9 pistons per foot, which each need 3 bones with proper naming and parenting and vertex groups and it got very tiring. Plus the tubing which itself required like 4 separate objects and two bones per tube. But it’s done now.

I was happy with how flexible I was able to make it while staying in the confines of what you could see on the actual robot.

The head took a lot of time too. As it’s so small compared to the rest of the body it was very hard to pick out the details, and you never get a good look at the back.

Well now I just have to make it all rusty! The GSR is something I’m very conflicted about in the story as parts of it I like but other parts are so dumb…

I’ve posted about the making of this on twitter and I guess images there are larger so if you want to see bigger versions of the final renders click here.

I made a little animation of zooming out from Tahu on Mata Nui. Everything’s scaled 1:1. Mata Nui is huge…

It’s a bit too big for blender I think, being on top of the Mangai Volcano Tahu was so far from centre his bones were getting all weird. The pistons were disconnected and his mask was off.

I may have made the volcano too tall, right now it’s almost 20km above sea level, which would make it over twice the height of Mt Everest and almost as tall as Olympus Mons…although it might be correct as Mata Nui is absolutely enormous.

I found a different picture that didn’t have all the markings on it, that saved me a lot of work. I added a slight texture to the water and made the lava in the Mangai caldera glow.

I experimented with some clouds but I wasn’t really liking the results and it managed to hard lock my computer twice…subsurf modifiers are dangerous.

Such a beautiful island…
