Hiccup lost a tailfin from an encounter with whalers. He wanders into shipwrecks to find things to tinker with and eventually build a replacement. But more vicious creatures stalk the bottom of the ocean and Hiccup’s had his fair share of encounters with the beasts of the deep.
Hiccup’s never been one to use his powers with bad intentions. Yet, when he spies a particularly handsome pirate one night he can’t help but hum a low tune to draw the man into the sea so he can get a closer look.
Viggo doesn’t like being so vulnerable in mermaid infested waters, but he’s found himself relaxing in the presence of the merman that’s taken an interest in him. It helps that the creature has kept him from drifting out of sight of his ship. It would help more if the blasted thing would just bring him back there instead of making him wait for his oaf of a brother to turn around and rescue him.
When Viggo instructed his brother to harvest tears from the mermaid, he didn’t think the man would be so brutal as to nearly kill the creature in the process.

After several escape attempts, Captain Astrid has elected to chain the vile merman in a tank with just enough water to keep him alive. If she can just get the information she needs from him, she might be persuaded to let him go. Until then, she’ll be careful to always lock the door to his tank.
