Guardians

These primitive fish are some of the largest known species inhabiting the ocean. It’s belived that they relied on underground chasms for territory, but in recent ages have taken to living in the now abandoned, submerged temples. Although their gills are inside their , they also possess primitive lungs, allowing them to spend prolonged periods of time out of water. Why such a deep dwelling creature would need such things is currently unknown. Guardians are hardy, possessing thick skin and bony armour, they can survive injuries that would otherwise be fatal to others. The main form of attack is a laser produced from their singular eye, which can leave devastating burns that can cut through unprotected bodies at the cost of damaging their own eye. Spines growing across defend them from other threats, including rival groups.

Elder Guardian
The dominant three males or females within the group, elders tend to develop cataracts and go blind, though this does not make them any less dangerous. It primarily relies on the surrounding guardians to keep it fed, though it won’t pass the opportunity to snatch up a wandering squid or two. Elders swiftly kick out any aging guardians to not risk being challenged, as banished elders tend to quickly starve to death. To save energy, they rest on flooring, whether temple floors or the ocean bottom. This sometimes causes a build-up of plant life and opportunistic molluscs to form on the underside.

Glow Squid
A newly discovered species. More research required.

~~~
This took much longer than it needed to tbh. Also I sketched out the glow squid before the mob video and voting (cause I thought it would be neat but now it won so-) before anyone says anything. I originally thought it would have been cool if they were deep dwelling and kraken sized squids that you’d just see as you rowed along the surfaceat night. I guess I got the deep dwelling part sort of right.
No axolotls though, I didn’t hear about them until not too long ago and by that point I didn’t want to add other things in :( Maybe I’ll do something for them later
First art of 2022 (+detail shot) let’s goooooo
I hope everyone had a happy new year! I figured I’d start the year off right with a piece that’s been on my mind since the middle of December. Not gonna lie, drawing the god rays & water surface ripples was a massive pain. So was designing an ocean monument that wasn’t just made of blocks, but was still recognizably an ocean monument.
Fun fact: I specifically chose the background colors here off the wiki page for Warm Ocean. The rest of the colors were almost completely improvised.
