Moon Animate Make-Up 2!

I got to animate an eye catch for the project this year. I’m so glad I got to take part again and had so much fun animating all the inner senshis! A huge thanks to Kate for organising and pulling together the whole project.

Hi everyone,

No luck yet with lifting the block, but I’ve made some inroads. Hoping we can get back online. Going to be moving the look of things around soon-ish so I’ll keep you all posted and thank you for sticking around.

I wanted to update because the news about Kyoto Animation is absolutely horrific. I’m a New Yorker with family who worked near the World Trade Center and I used to work near Sandy Hook. I am deeply familiar with waiting by the news for updates to make sure people are okay, and the dread as you realize it’s going to get worse. If anybody knew someone who worked there, all my love and strength and grief is with you.

My experience making Moon Animate Make-Up was that it was a lot of work, but it was always some of the most fun I’ve ever had, and that’s what animation should be. An animation office should be a place where you get to be happy and safe because you get to make cartoons for a living, and it means you get to give people joy. It’s a wonderful gift. Everyone who worked at Kyoto Animation got to do something beautiful for people and we are so fortunate to have had them.

I hope those who want peace have peace. I hope those who can’t stop screaming and crying until they feel normal get every piece of it out. Feel what you have to feel because you are allowed to have that. This is appalling in the extreme and there is never, ever, ever any reason for this level of violence.

This has been a news week of one horror after the other, and I hope everyone is managing it as best they can. This one hit home and I wanted to say I see you and I hope you’re taking care of yourselves.

Now go take a break from the computer. Do those piano hand stretches to keep your tendons limber, look outside so your eyes get re-adjusted to normal sunlight, get a glass of water, and talk to your friends.

Keep making the world a beautiful place. You’ve got a gift and we need it.

Have a good Thursday. <3

I want to take the time to thank you guys for your support. Fandom can be a hellscape, but I’ve always found the Moon Animate fans to be positive, encouraging, thoughtful, and kind. I am filled with love for you guys and I hope in your animation adventures, you never have a dropped frame.

I’ll keep you posted on what I can find out. In the mean time, thank you for the positive thoughts!

Hi everyone

A few days ago I got an email alerting me to a copyright claim by Viz Media. Moon Animate Make-Up is no longer available to view in the United States on YouTube. I’ve been trying to get in touch with someone at the company to see if the block could be lifted, but so far I’m hitting a wall.

The video has never been monetized, we all worked on it for free and for fun, and until its blocking, it had almost 2.5 million views. I’m going to keep doing what I can to get in touch with someone at Viz about it. In the mean time, thank you for understanding, if you know anyone I can get in touch with I’d appreciate it, and I hope I can get this back up for you all soon.

Thanks so much

Kate

Now that I’ve got a moment that doesn’t involve running around like a headless youma, there are people to be thanked.

First and foremost, I don’t think I’ve taken the time to properly say thank you to the 300+ amazing animators who took the time to pitch in on this project. Everyone who signed up did this for no money, in their spare time, just because it seemed like a cool thing to be a part of. Some of you waited months to hear from me since you first applied, some of you had to bail out because life happens, and some of you got e-mails from me asking, “can you turn this around in two days?” And somehow, you beautiful people, you made it happen.

The animation industry is in a weird place at the moment, but there is wonderful work being created. It’s because of people like you who do the work. Every single animator had a killer work ethic, a great attitude, a unique point of view, and terrific passion for animation. The annotations are something I started because it’s hugely important to me that the people who work for you get credit for what they contributed, and my hope is it leads to greater opportunities for them.

Big thank yous to Patrick Granger, Tori Herbst, and Sean McCann who kept me going with “you’re going to finish this thing, right?” which is what got me across the finish line. Lots of love to all my friends who spared time for a cup of tea and an ear for me to whine to as I was piecing this together. Special shout out to Angela De Vito who busted out some killer shots at the last minute and pulled my butt out of the fire. My amazing and super hot friends Nikhol and Shige Yoshii were our incredible Japanese transcribers so everyone who signed up knew what their characters were saying, thus preventing Godzilla dub mouths.

Moon Animate 3 will happen, but a girl’s gotta rest. I’m getting yanked between a big writing project and a big art project, so let me recharge my creative juices with either of those. The Vimeo edit is coming up with missing names from the YouTube version and touched up shots. I’m a bit crap about keeping a personal blog, but I’m over at @kaitlin-ps if you want to see what I’m up to, or good art and production stuff I reblog.

Moon Animate Make-Up 2 has over 150k views and the annotations are finally up! Check out your favorite animator! (Annotations can be turned off if you want to watch without them.)

We broke 105,000 views on YouTube today! Thank you guys! Let’s keep it going. Mama likes the ego fluffing. :D

1) Good news! I’m finally back online at my house so getting annotations and the Vimeo upload going will be a lot faster than it’s been. (Brilliant timing, right?) Moon Animate 2 was literally uploaded from my laptop in my bathroom because it was the only place I could get a signal before I got my wifi extender.

2) Vimeo’s upload will have any corrections that needed to happen. Annotations will be on YouTube. (I can re-upload the video on Vimeo. For now, I believe YouTube doesn’t allow that option.) Shoot me an e-mail if I missed something.

3) I’d like to do a Moon Animate 3, but I’d much rather let my brain repair first with another project. You know how the Dust Bowl happened because farmers didn’t rotate their crops and planting clover replenishes nitrogen in the soil? Yeah? Sort of? It’s like that. (Yes, it was ten other variables too but bear with me.) And hey, last time you got a Bartkira trailer out of me, so win/win.

4) No plans to do season 1 or 2 again or Dic. Might use the Viz dub for part 3, but would rather prioritize the original language.

5) In an attempt to put some kind of face on these projects, I’m over at @kaitlin-ps. I think I’ll be using it to talk about animation production, my favorite movies, books, artists, etc. Follow me if you want to see me yak about my bookshelf and movies or if you have questions. Or maybe it’ll just turn into a void with no updates for two years like any other non-work Tumblr I create.

6) YouTube comments are staying off. Protestations about your first amendment rights will just make me laugh myself into a cramp. You can talk about it literally anywhere else.

7) I’m on episode 3 of Stranger Things so y’all forgive me if I vanish for awhile so I can finish it. I’m digging the hell out of this synthwave.

86,000 views! Happy International Sailor Moon Day!

55,000 views in two days!

Thank you so much everyone for your support! This was rendered and uploaded on my laptop from the one weird corner of my house that gets wi-fi so thank you for bearing with me.

Huge important thank yous to everyone who contributed and took time out of their work and school schedules to chip in a shot or two or three. This project would not be here if not for the wonderful animators who helped put all the pieces together. Big love to Nikhol and Shige Yoshii for their transcribing so my mostly non-Japanese speaking animators could get a sense of what their characters were acting with. (I was terrified of Godzilla dub acting.) And to many many good friends who kept prodding me to ask, “you’re going to finish this thing, right?”

My name isn’t spelled right/is missing

Thank you for letting me know! Please shoot me an e-mail with anything I might have flubbed. There will be an edit with corrections for the Vimeo upload. (YouTube won’t let me replace the video without losing everything.)

Can I upload this with the Dic dub/Spanish dub/German dub/individual clips? Why didn’t you use the Dic version?

Guys, the body’s not even cold. Let everyone’s work be enjoyed first. Come back to me in a week or two about other languages. English speakers, you got the subtitles. I didn’t use the Dic dub because there was so much they cut out of the episode and I’m not a fan of season two’s acting. Also if I’ve got an opportunity to reanimate “She’s Got the Power” or “Ai no Senshi”, my pick is pretty obvious.

When’s Moon Animate 3?

I’m very flattered so many want to sign on to the next one, but let my soul find my body again. My hard drive needs sleep. I’ve got a few ideas of what I’d like to do for Moon Animate 3, but my brain needs a palate cleanser and I’ve got something else in mind for the next animated project.

Who animated this shot?

Annotations will be up later this week.

How can I get in touch about one of your artists/you and your awesome work?

*winkwinknudgenudge* Just shoot me an e-mail at moonanimatemakeup (at) gmail (dot) com and I can help you out.

I want to sign up to work on Moon Animate 2! Here’s my reel!

We’re actually all done. That’s why it’s up on YouTube. I’m not taking reels right now for the third one, but if and when that happens, I’ll post here.

What’s next?

Probably hotboxing my apartment with Raspberry Kush while I listen to Mussorgsky and Dvorak at top volume. (HA, not really.) I can relax for maybe twenty minutes before I’m back to work on the next thing. I already started storyboarding and some vis dev for the next project but I’ll post more about that when I’m ready.

Make sure you’re watching in 720p! Enjoy!

Sorry east coast. Best case scenario, this is up later tonight for a 7/31 debut west coast time. Worst case scenario, it’s up tomorrow. Some of the retakes took longer than anticipated, including time re-mapping most of the second half of the episode to fix a lot of lip sync issues. And I caught a bug that’s got me operating at half speed.

Current status is I’m halfway through the subtitles and it’s slow work, but it’s getting done. I’m so grateful for how excited you guys are for this becuase it’s giving me the energy I need to keep going. This is a really good one. There are about 315 animators who worked on this and I cannot sing enough of their praises for how hard they worked to get this done.

Thank you for your patience. It’ll be up soon.

Moon Animate Make-Up 2 will be live July 31, 2016! Here’s a preview of the episode!

Sequences 010, 020, 030, 040, 060, and 080 are rendered! I have some edits to do on 050 and I’m waiting on a few shots for 070 and then that’s in the bag.

I can’t say enough awesome things about the wonderful animators who signed on to get this project done! I’m hoping to get this up before Comic Con next week and it’ll still be up anyway. Thank you so much for all of your patience!

And look both ways before crossing the street in Pokemon Go. :)
