ARTHROPOCENE, on display in THE END IS NIGH at @lightgreyartgallery until Jan 8, 2022!

In every mass extinction in our planet’s history, there have always been survivors: taxa that, for some reason or another, survived under adverse conditions to eventually repopulate the earth with their descendants. In the midst of the sixth mass extinction, humanity often finds itself asking which animals will emerge on the other side of this one. The top contenders for an apocalyptic scenario are not humans, or even mammals; most of them are not even vertebrates. The survivors will be those that pass unnoticed at best and inspire revulsion at worst: arthropods like cockroaches and scorpions, micro-animals like tardigrades, and perhaps small and highly adaptable vertebrates like mummichogs.

Life will continue after the end of humanity, and not necessarily in a form that people would like to see. But when humankind is no longer around to pass judgment, these creatures will still reign as the survivors of whatever is to come. One day, too, the cockroaches and tardigrades will end, but not for a long time.
