ARTHROPOCENE, on display in THE END IS NIGH at @lightgreyartgallery until Jan 8, 2022!

In every mass extinction in our planet’s history, there have always been survivors: taxa that, for some reason or another, survived under adverse conditions to eventually repopulate the earth with their descendants. In the midst of the sixth mass extinction, humanity often finds itself asking which animals will emerge on the other side of this one. The top contenders for an apocalyptic scenario are not humans, or even mammals; most of them are not even vertebrates. The survivors will be those that pass unnoticed at best and inspire revulsion at worst: arthropods like cockroaches and scorpions, micro-animals like tardigrades, and perhaps small and highly adaptable vertebrates like mummichogs.

Life will continue after the end of humanity, and not necessarily in a form that people would like to see. But when humankind is no longer around to pass judgment, these creatures will still reign as the survivors of whatever is to come. One day, too, the cockroaches and tardigrades will end, but not for a long time.

Here’s my piece for Light Grey Art Lab’s Botanica exhibition. I really like water lilies - they are so mysterious! They are also thought to be some of the earliest plants to evolve flowers.

Bower Bird
Light Grey Art Lab

I did a piece for a LGAL show–my first in a while! I just felt very strongly about this prompt–collections–because I’m such a collector. I have many small groups of objects around my house that I have no reason to keep except that they remind me of places, conversations, people. They are small self-portraits. I decided to illustrate this one, since I like painting small bits of paper. These are all the movie ticket stubs I’ve kept since 2007, along with some related mementos.

If you’re in the area, check out the show! Also, You can buy a postcard or print of this piece at the LGAL shop. (I also recorded a time-lapse video while painting this, and I’ll be posting that soon…)

This is my piece for the Light Grey Art Lab Midnight Show. You can purchase prints and check out the other amazing works here!

“Awhile ago I had the flu along with a high fever. I managed to drift off to sleep and found myself in a chaotic dream where I was staring down into a pond with koi fish swimming in it. After some time I began to notice the patterns on the koi fish were beginning to depict familiar silhouettes such as flowers and animals. But the one that stuck out to me the most was a very graphic skull. I was so startled that I woke up and couldn’t fall back asleep for the rest of the night.”

my final piece for the Light Grey Art Lab’s The End Is Night Exhibit.

“CHILDIRICI REGIS” is a visual exploration of Frankish King Childeric I’s burial treasure, which contained elaborate works of gold and garnet cloisonné jewelry. Most of this treasure no longer exists, save for two out of hundreds of cloisonné bees.

If you’d like to see the exhibition, it’s in-person in Light Grey Art Lab’s space in Minneapolis for a limited time OR view it on their website here. You can purchase individual prints (including this piece) or pre-order the book of the whole exhibition here

½ of the pieces I did for Rafael Mayani’s show at Light Grey Art Lab! The show is called Synesthesia, with themes about memories an feelings tied to certain senses. One of my fondest memories is walking to the flower markets with my mum in Hong Kong and the osmanthus blooms that line a small alley perpendicular to Bird Street. The show opens April 27th and has a bunch of really cool folks!!
