2016: The Year of the Move

Here at the Rita Benton Music Library, the year 2016 is going to be one for the books. This year, we’ll move into the new Voxman Music Building, which is a replacement facility for the previous Voxman Music Building was lost in the 2008 flood.

Thenew Rita Benton Music Library will be located on the first floor of this magnificent structure. There’s a lot of work that goes into moving a library collection into a new space, and we’ll be sharing some of the various tasks and decisions made along the way here on Tumblr.

Today, we have a new hand drawn floor map for our current location on the second floor of the University of Iowa’s Main Library (see above). We’ve been shifting collections over the break in order to prepare them for new shelving arrangements and limitations in the new space.

Over the last three weeks, members of the library staff and many of our student workers have separated the Ms (book-sized scores) from the fMs (folio-sized scores).

Next, we loaded scores onto every table in sight and started shifting!

Since we’ve moved so much around, it was time to make a new temporary floor map to explain where everything will be…for now.

A big shout out to all our student workers and Library Assistant Dr. Amy McBeth, who have been living this gif for several hours a day since December.
