Tonight’s Monday Philm: My Boyfriend’s Back (1993), dir. Bob Balaban
Already wrote a somewhat longer review of this movie when I watched it for the first time last Halloween — and how much can I say about this one, really? (Plus, PSH has so few scenes it was even hard to use different screenshots than last time lol). Funnier on a rewatch, still not exactly my kind of humor but it’s just so marvelously stupid. So many hilarious one liners — “Bye, son. Be nice to G-d.” “Colleges look at this sort of thing!” “Your pulse is just a little lower than I’d like.” It’s those quick moments, with Edward Herrmann and Austin Pendleton and others, that make this so much fun. And Chuck Bronski.
Enjoy it even more since hearing director Bob Balaban talk about working with Phil at that age, how assured and brilliant but kind and polite he was. “I want you to know, I don’t always play football heroes who get eaten by zombies. I can basically do anything. I can be romantic, I can be adventurous, I can be the bad guy, I can be the good guy. I really can do anything, so please remember that.Don’t forget,” he told Bob. Of all the things Phil Hoffman was and is, “easily forgotten” has never been one of them — so good job, buddy.
