Jack Goes Boating was Philip Seymour Hoffman’s first (and, sadly, only) film as director. Hoffman also stars as the eponymous Jack, a lonely limo driver whose friends set him up on a blind date. While he and Connie (Amy Ryan) are taking their first tentative steps into a relationship, the friends who introduced them (John Ortiz and Daphne Rubin-Vega) are reaching the end of their own relationship.

It’s hardly a unique story, but Hoffman’s sensitive direction and the four lead actors’ performances make it touching and compelling. It’s a sore reminder of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s talent, and the tragedy of his loss.

What a cast! William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin, Clark “isn’t that the guy from the Marvel movies?” Gregg, and the sorely missed Philip Seymour Hoffman, to name but a few. Too often I have been let down by such a promising cast, but I’m glad to say I thoroughly enjoyed David Mamet’s behind-the-scenes comedy, State and Main.

Stub Catalog: May 11, 1996 - Twister

Thoughts in hindsight…
  • ‘96 was a solid year for blockbuster movies. This was right around when I started going to movies with my friends instead of my father. Seismic shift. He gave me a good start. I’m not sure if my choices followed through on that promise. We’ll see.
  • The scene with the cow killed me. You know the one. Also when Philip Seymour Hoffman shouts “We crave sustenance!” Random.
