Apologies for the long post, but I’ve put together a list of some TV shows to help fill the void… or ya know make it larger whatever.  Some of these are just my personal favorites that I highly recommend, and some are historically based like Turn.  Let me know what you guys think or if you have any suggestions that didn’t make it on my list! All these are on Netflix:

Peaky Blinders

image

Peaky Blinders is one of my all time favorites!  It centers around a family-based gang in England between WW1 and WW2 (and also Cillian Murphy’s cheekbones).  The fourth season just came out on netflix and so far it’s definitely living up.  One of my fav things about it is that it’s set in the past, but incorporates a modern rock soundtrack, which makes for some really unique filmography.  Just a warning it’s a lot more R-rated and gruesome than Turn, so not for the faint of heart.

Rebellion

image

Rebellion is a Sundance/AMC miniseries following three different women during the 1916 Irish rebellion.  It’s a quick must watch!

Broadchurch

image

Broadchurch is another all time favorite!  It’s not historical, but David Tennant and a gripping storyline make up for that.  It’s a modern day murder mystery set in a picturesque coastal town in England.  The third and final :( season just came out on netflix, and was, as expected, fantastic.

Mindhunter

image

For the Ham fans out there, Mindhunter stars our beloved Jonathan Groff.  He plays young 1970s FBI agent Holden Ford, on a quest to understand how serial killers think.  Every minute is fascinating, albeit v emotionally disturbing.  Again, Turn fandom beware–language and nudity warning.

The Crown

I’ll admit, I wasn’t a fan right off the bat–it was too slow.  But, what can I say, it grew on me.  And who doesn’t have a fascination with the British royalty?

Hell on Wheels

image

Probably the most similar to Turn on my list, Hell on Wheels is another AMC show set during the period directly after the American Civil War and centers on the lives of the workers building the transcontinental railroad.  I haven’t watched much past season 3, but its gritty and v entertaining.

Medici: Masters of Florence

image

Based on the actual the family that dominated the Italian Renaissance, the Medici reminds me somewhat of Game of Thrones.  That may also be because Richard Madden plays lead.  Regardless it’s great and I’ve heard there’s a second season in the works (which may include Sean Bean and be ever more game of thrones-esque).
