Playing Melchior was like such a gift because he was everything that I wanted to be but I wasn’t. He had this ability to not let the world define him, and to speak his mind and to be strong. And playing him for two years, like, cultivated this confident, strong side of myself that I didn’t have in my real life that I was learning how to have by playing Melchior, and to come to terms with who I was. And a month after I left the show, I came out of the closet, and I started my life.

Part valentine to the theater, part unconventional love story, “Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known” celebrates the show and its original cast, while also providing a broader look at the issues of teen rebellion and alienation that turned the musical into a sensation. Or just come for the adorable interplay between Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele, and the bond they forged through their time together on the show.

Directed by Michael John Warren, “Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known” also addresses how the themes within the show resonated among a younger audience in a manner that in some respects, given the current cultural debate, feels even more relevant and timely now.

So while the documentary focuses on the young actors and their particular experience, it simultaneously explains why this is one of those productions where each generation appears destined to have its own “Awakening.”

Awards Daily

When the cast is together again, it is an emotional experience. Groff unexpectedly starts to cry when Michele sings the first few notes of ‘Mama Who Bore Me’ during rehearsal, and, even though the material lends itself to angst and raucousness, there are only tender feelings amongst this group. In confessionals, Michele details just how deeply she fell in love with Groff as they started working together, but it’s Groff’s recounting of his own coming out experience that really tugs at your heart. Director Michael Mayer thought the actor might be gay, but he told himself that he would let Groff come out on his terms, if he felt so inclined.

New York Times

The winner of eight Tonys in 2007 including best musical, “Spring Awakening” now gets an adoring documentary for a victory lap celebration. “Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known” does a suitably wide-eyed recap of the show’s success, on the occasion of a recent reunion concert with the endearingly jazzed cast. Michael John Warren’s film is a sure-handed blend of making-of explainer, theater-kid scrapbook and jukebox documentary, doling out hits from its theatrical run (through clips) and the reunion.

Pop Culture Planet

Fans of the musical will love how sentimental the cast gets about their experience and the peek inside the lifelong friendships they’ve developed, including a surprisingly endearing story of female anatomy between besties Michele and Groff. The musical numbers are incredible, raw, and emotionally charged as we go back and forth between current and older performance footage. At its heart, Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known is a love letter to the world of theatre and the power it has to impact people and remind them that they’re not alone.

What truly sets Those You’ve Known apart is everyone’s willingness to be honest. Including the way it’s directed, people are able to be critical when criticism is deserved, and offer up more than superficial recollections.

That’s what makes this an incredible piece of filmmaking (and theatregoing by extension).

GROFF: It’s one thing to go on a set and act again, but it’s another thing to step on a stage, live in front of people, and have that also be filmed. It was extreme, but it really focused us. When we were 19 and 21 years old, we were kids, so we weren’t able to process what happened and what we were singing and what we were expressing. And so, to be able to go back to that material, it wasn’t that I was nervous about being able to execute it. It was about trying not to cry while it was happening. Even back in the day, I couldn’t wait to get the microphone out and sing and play this role, one more time. To me, it was the gift of a lifetime

Jonathan, did you cry when it was over?

GROFF: I didn’t.

MICHELE: He actually didn’t.

GROFF: I didn’t cry when it was over. When it was over, the second I walked off-stage, Lauren Pritchard fell into my arms and hysterically cried for about 60 seconds. I remember holding her, and she was just like, “We did it! We did it! We did it!” That was the first time she really lost it. She was holding on, and then that was her moment of release. I was releasing throughout.

MICHELE: We had a dance party afterwards. We were so happy about the fact that we pulled this off and that we did it for The Actors Fund, and we got to raise money for such a worthy cause. We danced. My husband yanked me off the dance floor at like 5 AM. I was dancing with Jonathan and the rest of the cast, and he was like, “We have to go home. Our son is gonna wake up in two hours. The babysitter has to be relieved.” We celebrated.

Town and Country magazine

Lea Michele: He’s seen it a couple times and then I got to watch it last night with John and John Groff. They sat next to me.

Jonathan Groff: John Gallagher!

LM: Sorry—oh my God, that would be my dream, two Jonathan Groffs. One is available to talk to me, then the other one would be free, and it would be a dream come true. But until I can multiply Jonathan Groff, I have John Gallagher Jr., and we watched it together. It was so incredible to see it and to watch it with these men I’ve known forever.

LM [tearing up]: We hope in life that we meet like one soulmate, you know? I’m so fortunate every night that I get to go home to the most amazing husband and son, but even outside of that, that I have a soulmate in Jonathan.

There are friends, but then there are friends that stand the test of time and that stand by your side. Jonathan stood by my side during the biggest tragedy that I have ever experienced, but he also stood by my side at my wedding. I didn’t have bridesmaids, I had Jonathan Groff. And I’m so grateful to him; there are moments where I truly can say, I would not have survived if it wasn’t for Jonathan.

Also, in life, it’s so comforting to have someone that sees you and your shoulders drop because you know when you’re with that person that they understand you and they see you. No matter what season or phase of life you’re in, and I’m so grateful that I have that in him.

Including:

Despite all-cameras being on them, Groff and John Gallagher Jr. (who played Moritz) both agreed that the filming of the performance didn’t feel “intrusive.” A more significant challenge, said Gallagher Jr., was the simple act of reuniting the team. “It’s hard to get everybody in the same place again with this many people after this many years. Everyone’s scattered and then has their life and their calling,” the actor told THR. “So it would be enough just to get back together for one night only, but then to have it be captured for posterity the way it is and to be shared with the world on the global stage — it’s almost overwhelming.”

“Spring Awakening was happening before the wave of social media, so all of the videos and performances that you have now didn’t exist,” Groff said. “So to be able to come back and do the songs together and talk about the show, and have it recorded is so profound for us because we never got that video record, either from the show being recorded or even from just like the record that we’re now so used to with social media.”
