Happy Birthday David Attenborough[b: 8th May 1926]

It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.

From Orson Welles’ Sketchbook - 1955

Let me tell you something: I LOVE Orson’s nose. I have loved Orson’s nose for almost as long as I’ve loved Orson. Since, in fact, the second film I saw him in (The Lady From Shanghai). I hadn’t realised, watching the first (Jane Eyre) that it was not his nose.

Let me tell you something else: I love Orson’s stories, but I don’t always believe them. And so what more lunatic better project than a study of all his film noses, just to see if he’s actually telling the truth, here.

Here is the full thing in all its insanity glory just in case you should ever need it. Or if you want to choose an Orson film to watch to celebrate his birthday.

Part One: The 1940s

Part Two: The 1950s

Part Three: The 1960s

Part Four: The 1970s and 1980s

This was both ridiculous and a labour of love, and I regret not one minute of it (ok that’s a lie, I regret a lot of it post about 1962).
