‘Micronewtons of influence’

“The Hands considers memory leaks and “junk” DNA how a confluence of ancestral ghosts piggybacks on successful features and may exert micronewtons of influence until silent predispositions erupt, chronic as consciousness. To sleep, perchance to dream. There’s a ghost in your machine and, dysfunctional or ingenious, that syncretism is too secret to be seen, impossible to excise without consequence. In this confusion we are kin. Like the doctors, I can’t fix what no one understands.” From ‘Strandbeest Dreams’ by Lisa M. Bradley and José M. Jimenez An anthology ‘Sunvault: Stories of Solarpunk and Eco-Speculation’ Published by Upper Rubber Boot Books.

‘Live forever’

“Laws about heritage and inheritance had changed a great deal in the last twenty years because of new possibilities such as cloning, uploading of consciousness, and asexual human reproduction, but it was still not so easy to declare someone dead.”

‘Smart Wallpaper’

“First they went to Decor Botanicals, where a team of five seniors was developing Smart Wallpaper that would change color on the walls of your room to compliment your mood. This wallpaper - they told Jimmy - had a modified form of Kirilian-energy-sensing algae embedded in it, along with a sublayer of algae nutrients, but there were still some glitches to be fixed. The wallpaper was short-lived in humid weather because it ate up all the nutrients and went grey; also it could not tell the difference between drooling lust and murderous rage, and was likely to turn your wallpaper an erotic pink when what you really needed was a murky, capillary-bursting greenish red.” From “Oryx and Crake” by Margaret Atwood. ‘Artif-Org’

“George Walt’s corporate existence proved the workability of wholly mechanical organs… they would be left alone if they would reveal the manufacture of their highly sophisticated and successful artificial components. It was, most likely, a West German firm; the cartels were most advanced in such experimentation.

…if they keep after me, or if they won’t make a deal regarding artif-org construction - then it’ll be necessary to do something.”

‘Worldcraft Bubble’

The Worldcraft bubble glittered, catching the light… Lora turned on the bubble. It glowed, winking into brilliance… She increased the magnification, bringing the microscopic central planet into focus… Again Lora increased the magnification. The central planet grew, showing a pale green ocean lapping faintly at a low shoreline. A city came into view, towers and broad streets, fine ribbons of gold and steel. Above, twin suns beamed down, warming the city. Myriads of inhabitants swarmed about their activities… The inhabitants of the city came into sharp view. They hurried about their business, endless thousands of them. In cars and on foot. Across spidery spans between buildings, breathtakingly beautiful. From The Trouble With Bubbles, by Philip K. Dick. ‘WatchdØg’

What happens when mankind is ready to leave the cradle and seek other worlds? Who can you leave behind?

…the earth shook and the sky split as the giant rockets lifted the soul and body of man to Pluto and the distant stars.

Only he stayed behind.

Basically he was six hundred square miles of squat building, with control over a world-wide network of smaller stations and probes.

A babysitter.

‘Emissarial Projection’

“Do you know what an emissarial projection is…? It’s when they send a tuned suite of queries and responses to a remote location, by light beam. To play the part of an emissary.”

“…If we are to believe what we are told, the object they send is something like a library, transmitted by a signal laser. Suitably housed and emplaced within enabled equipment of sufficient capacity and complexity, this… entity, though it is simply a many-branched array of statements, questions and answers, with a set of rules governing the order in which they are expressed, is able to carry out what seems like an intelligent conversation. It is as close as one is allowed to to come to an artificial intelligence.

‘Retroviral therapy’

Despite her surname, Cláudia Abdala was blond and blue eyed. Nothing that looked artificial, but so what? Nowadays, a good doctor can reprogram virtually any gene, including those esponsible for pigmentation. There is an endless debate about the “futile” use ethics of retroviral therapy, but whoever has the money to pay does not usually pay attention to these things. Fiction is full of researchers who live by repeating things like “there are no coincidences” or “I don’t believe in coincidences,” but chance is a far more powerful influence than most people are willing to admit. Randomness and incompetence kill far more people than professional murderers and crime geniuses.

‘Boulder’

“The weapon which Herb Lackmore had been provided with contained a costly replica of the encephalic brainwave pattern of James Briskin. He needed merely to place the device within a few miles of Briskin, screw in the handle, and then, with a switch, detonate it. It was a mechanism, he decided, which provided little if any personal satisfaction."

‘Mycroft Holmes’

“When Mike was installed in Luna, he was pure thinkum, a flexible logic - "High-Optional, Logical, Multi-evaluating Supervisor, Mark IV, Mod. L” - a HOLMES FOUR. He computed ballistics for pilotless freighters and controlled their catapult. This kept him busy less than one percent of time and Luna Authority never believed in idle hands. They kept hooking hardware into him - decision-action boxes to let him boss other computers, bank on bank of additional memories, more banks of associational neural nets, another tubful of twelve-digit random numbers, a greatly augmented temporary memory. Human brain has around ten-to-the-tenth neurons. By third year Mike had better than one and a half times that many neuristors. And woke up.“

‘Nexus-6 Brain Unit’

The Nexus-6 did have two trillion constituents plus a choice within a range of ten million possible combinations of cerebral activity. In .45 of a second an android equipped with such a brain could assume any one of fourteen basic reaction-postures. Well, no intelligence test could trap such an andy. But then, intelligence tests hadn’t trapped an andy in years, not since the primordial, crude varieties of the 1970’s. The Nexus-6 android types, Rick reflected, surpassed several classes of human specials in terms of intelligence. In other words, androids equipped with the new Nexus-6 brain unit had from a sort of rough pragmatic standpoint evolved beyond a major - but inferior - segment of mankind… But new scales of achievement, for example the Voight-Kampf Empathy test, had emerged as criteria by which to judge. An android, no matter how gifted as to pure intellectual capacity, could make no sense out of the fusion which took place routinely among the followers of Mercerism - an experience which he, and virtually everyone else, including subnormal chickenheads, managed with no difficulty.

‘Technological independence’

After the unification of the planet, the Rebouças brothers’ study showed the dangers of greenhouse effect amplification for the climate and the planetary environment, after which UN resolutions increasingly restricted the use of fossil fuels. And also of nuclear energy, after its risks were evidenced when an earthquake followed by tsunami devastated the plant of Paramonga, in the Tauantinsuio. Fifty years later, there were only thirty experimental nuclear power plants and three hundred small research reactors operating in the world, all under strict supervision by the Union of Nations Commission on Science and Culture. And coal, oil, and gas were being used only as chemical raw materials. Former mining and industrial centers disappeared in many places. Although the Union financed the substitution of renewable energy sources, the imposition aroused much resentment in Eurasia, where many saw the threat of global warming as a forged pretext to deprive them of their technological independence and subject them to the uniform and oppressive vulgarity of solar panels and wind turbines that turned magnificent landscapes in ugly things to behold.
