It’s a bittersweet day as we say farewell to a medical illustrator innovator, the manager of Neuroscience Publications, Mark Schornak. He will be joining the team at @unc_neurosurgery Chapel Hill. Mark has worked at here at @barrowneuro for the last 30 years, creating countless traditional and digital neurosurgical drawings and paintings, and inspiring the next generation of medical illustrators.
Mark hired me as a medical illustrator at Barrow’s Neuroscience Publications department back in 2016. Over the years, Mark has been a great friend and mentor to me, always taking the time to help me understand complex neurosurgical concepts and being patient with me as I drew things incorrectly over and over again. Mark’s impressive knowledge of neuroanatomy combined with his unique artistic approach to illustration has made him a medical illustrator in a league of his own. As an illustrator, I don’t think I’m capable of filling Mark’s shoes, but it’s an honor to walk in his footsteps.
