Chapter 1:

It was a quiet day in France. The sky was clear and there was no sign of rain clouds nearby. It was the perfect time for Sasha Braus to hunt.

Sasha took a deep breath and positioned herself behind the bush. There, many yards away was an unsuspected deer eating some grass. Sasha pulled her arm back, her fingers lightly grazed her cheek, and both eyes were trained on the deer. She took a deep breath and released the arrow on the exhale.

The arrow directly hit the deer near the middle of its body and fell with a thump. Sasha relaxed and laid down on the soft grass. She let out a soft laugh and smiled at the sky.

At least she and Connie won’t be hungry tonight.

It was almost 7 am when Sasha carried the deer’s body through her tiny village. It was a normal village. Everyone who lived there went through the same routine every day. As villagers started waking up to start their day, some greeted Sasha as she passed. Others decided they could talk behind Sasha’s back.

“Look, it’s that ‘Sasha’ girl,” one man whispered to his wife while eyeing Sasha.

“It’s a shame that someone like her is not very lady-like,” the wife sighed.

Meanwhile, Sasha continued to walk with no intention of stopping until she made it to her destination.

“I’m back!” Sasha announced to the empty shop. A pair of footsteps started heading in Sasha’s direction and a mop of messy brown hair popped out.

“Oh, hello, Sasha.” Hange, Levi’s wife, greeted before turning her head back in the direction she came. “Oi. Levi! Sasha is here and you’re needed up front!”

Hange quickly disappeared and was replaced by a short man with jet black hair and a grumpy face.

“I got a good one, Levi,” Sasha said proudly as she set the deer on the counter and Levi inspected it.

Levi hummed and a small smirk graced his face. “You did a good job, Sasha.” He reached up and ruffled her hair. “I’m proud of you. Now come back later tonight to pick up the venison.”

Sasha smiled and saluted Levi. “Aye aye, Captain,” she replied before giggling to herself.

Levi rolled his eyes but his smirk remained. “You know my army days are over, Sasha. Oh and you can just wait here until I am done. It’s won’t take long, and Hange has some things she wants to give you.”

“Alright!” Sasha exclaimed and sat down on a nearby stool. She started to people watch and dream about what to eat for dinner. The venison would be a big feast for her and her brother. It would feed them for days until she could come back with more food.

Her thoughts were interrupted when another figure sat down and moved their stool next to hers. Sasha wanted to roll her eyes. The man didn’t have to talk for her to already know who it was. Reiner Braun, the biggest meathead in town.

“Well hello, Sasha. It is lovely seeing you here today.” He said with a sewage tone that wanted to throw up. Her eyes moved past Reiner’s shoulder to see his friend (more like henchman) Bertolt sweating in his spot. Sasha wished it was Bertolt in Reiner’s spot instead of him. She could at least tolerate the tall male.

“It is nice to see you here too,” Sasha replied with gritted teeth. Her eyes darted towards Levi doing his job, silently wishing for him to hurry up.

“I see that you were out hunting again,” Reiner said nonchalantly and pointed to Sasha’s bow. “What did you catch? A rabbit or a quail?”

Sasha never wanted to punch someone so badly. “Actually, Reiner, I caught a deer. A female one in fact.”

Reiner stared at Sasha skeptically. “You? You caught a deer?”

“Do you not believe me? Hey Levi!” Sasha yelled. “Show Reiner what I caught.” Levi raised up part of the cut deer for Reiner to see. “See.” Sasha said with a smirk.

Reiner shook his head with disapproval. “Sasha, you should not be yelling out in public. That is unladylike.”

“Uhh Reiner?” Bertolt said hesitantly, not wanting anything to escalate.

Sasha rolled her eyes. “Here we go again.” She began to stand up and walked to the counter. She did not want to hear Reiner’s lecture….again. “I’ll come back later, Levi.” She said and walked out of the shop.

“Got it.” He replied and went back to work.

“Wait for me, Sasha.” Reiner quickly jumped up and followed her, Bertolt trailed behind.

It was finally quiet when Hange reappeared holding a basket of goods. “Sasha! I brought you some of the cool stuff I found out of town- Eh? Sasha?”

—-

“Women should not be hunting. It ruins their image.”

“Uh huh.”

“They should stay in the kitchen. Take care of their husbands and their kids.”

“Sure.”

“I think that this would be great for you. Stay at home and take care of a handsome guy like me.”

“What?”

“Do you get what I mean?” Reiner asked after he and Sasha stopped in front of her door.

“No, I do not.” Sasha snapped. “Why should I care if a guy thinks I am unattractive for hunting? I enjoy it and if a guy does not like it then that sucks for them. It’s not my problem.” She gripped her doorknob with a vice grip.

“But Sasha-“

“Goodbye!” She quickly opened and slammed the door at his face. Sasha let out a sigh as she slumped against the door and waited for Reiner to leave. She let it all out once Reiner was gone.

“HOW DARE HE HAVE THE AUDACITY TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO?” She yelled out and carelessly threw her stuff to the side.

“Hello to you too, sister.” Sasha’s brother, Connie, called out from the living room.

“Hi, Connie,” Sasha grumbled before she grabbed a pillow and screamed into it.

“Reiner problems?” Connie asked as he walked up to his sister.

Sasha turned her head to look at Connie. “He’s a dick.”

“Language!” Connie said sarcastically.

Sasha truly wanted to laugh, but Reiner’s words lingered in her head. Sure, she did not have any guys at her doorstep, but that was because she was always out in the woods. It’s not her fault that they cannot have a huge feast every day.

Connie noticed his sister frowning. “What’s wrong, Sasha?”

“Do guys just think of me as undesirable?

Connie rolled his eyes. "Who cares what those guys think? There will be a guy out there who appreciates you for who you are.”

Sasha’s frown turned into a small grin. “Thanks, Connie.”

Connie chuckled and ruffled Sasha’s hair. “Of course. I’ll always have your back. Speaking of that-“ Sasha curiously watched as Connie walked towards a cabinet and pulled out a heavy-looking sack. “Guess who has enough money to eat like a king?”

Sasha’s jaw dropped as Connie dropped the sack on the table, it hit the surface with a loud thud. “No. Way. This will go great with the deer I caught today!”

“Even better!” Connie exclaimed. “I need to go now so I can make it to the city on time before sunset.” He said as he glanced outside the window.

“So soon? Can’t you just wait until the morning?”

Connie shook his head. “I will be fine, Sasha. I’ll be riding on Marco. I will make it in no time.”

“Alright.” Sasha sighed. “Just make it back safe okay?”

Connie grinned. “Of course! What could possibly go wrong?”

—-

Remember how Connie mentioned what could go wrong with his trip? Well, he regretted saying that aloud.

First off, he was lost in the woods. Connie, who had been to the city multiple times, saw a new path and assumed it was a newly created shortcut. Who knew what it actually was? The scenery had done a whole 180 from a peaceful and sunny forest to a dark and spooky area with dead trees.

Connie’s horse trudged along slowly and it shook from a wolf’s howl.

“Hey, it’s okay,” Connie said reassuringly as he patted his horse. “I’m sure that we will get to our destination in no time.”

Connie never made it to the city. Instead, he stumbled upon an old mansion in the middle of nowhere. It was mostly intact, but there was a very ominous air surrounding it. It looked very cold and unwelcoming, yet something behind the fence caught Connie’s eye. There in the backyard, were rows of vegetables. They looked like they were just about ready to be harvested. Connie’s mouth began to water like when Sasha sees meat. There was enough food to feed the two for the rest of the year!

Connie held the reins to stop his horse, unaware of a pair of eyes watching him the whole time from his mansion.

“I will be right back.” He said as he slid down and made his way to the garden. Meanwhile, Connie’s horse watched his master with uncertainty. He let out a small neigh in an attempt to stop him. “It will be okay. I will just get some food and then we can go back home.”

Connie kneeled down beside a potato plant, eyes already glowing because it is his sister’s favorite vegetable. He was in the middle of reaching towards it when his house let out a louder neigh, but Connie ignored it, thinking that the wind spooked him. His hand had only grazed the leaf when he heard a growl coming from behind him.

Connie stopped and gulped out of fear. He slowly turned around to greet the new visitor.

“Hi…..”

Earlier

It had been hours after Sasha returned to Levi’s to pick up her catch when Reiner and Bertolt hid behind some bushes near the Springer house.

“Are you sure that this is a good idea? Sasha did not seem happy with you this morning.” Bertolt asked with some slight hesitation. His eyes were focused on said woman waving goodbye to her brother.

Reiner rolled his eyes. “She will forgive and forget. I know she will once she sees this fat diamond ring that I will present to her.”

“Okay…” Bertolt trailed off, still uncertain about the plan. He let out a small oof when Reiner patted him on the back.

“Wish me luck, Bertolt. Remember to cue the percussions after my signal.” Reiner said with a proud smile and walked off towards Sasha’s house with a bouquet of roses.

Meanwhile, Sasha was reading in the living room when she heard a loud knock on her door. She closed the book and walked towards the new invention Hange had installed on her door (she called it a peephole) to see who was outside.

“Ugh. Great.” Sasha groaned when she saw Reiner’s face. She cleared her throat before opening the door. “Reiner! It is so nice to see you again,” she greeted with a fake smile on her face.

Reiner chuckled and handed Sasha the roses. “I just had to see your beautiful face again. May I come in?” he asked with a suave tone that made Sasha want to puke.

“Of course. You can sit on the couch while I find a vase for these flowers.” She stepped aside so Reiner could go in. “Would you like something to drink?” she asked as she set the flowers down in an empty vase.

Reiner shook his head. “No thank you but I appreciate the offer. I actually want to talk to you about something.”

“You do?” She asked as she set the vase down on the coffee table.

“Sasha.” Reiner stood up and unexpectedly grabbed both of her hands. “What do you think you will be doing 10 years from now?”

“Well, I haven’t thought that far ahead…”

“Sasha, you are already 22 years old. You should be settled down.”

“Settled down?” She asked skeptically.

“Massaging your husband’s feet after a long day”

“Massaging?!”

“Taking care of your eight kids.”

“E-EIGHT KIDS?!?!”

Reiner nodded and looked at Sasha with sympathy on his face. “It is the perfect life for a lady! No duties or responsibilities outside of the house. Everything will be in reach.”

Sasha stared at Reiner with confusion. “What are you trying to say?”

Reiner smiled charmingly. “Sasha, will you marry me?”

Sasha’s eyes grew wide. There was no way that she was marrying Reiner. He did not even get down on one knee and present her a ring! She would rather marry a pig than him. At least it had more common sense than him. Suddenly, she had an idea.

“Reiner.” Sasha started with a smile. “It warms my heart hearing that from you.” She started leading him by walking backwards until her back hit the door. Reiner took the opportunity to trap her by placing both of his hands on either side of her head. Sasha began to sweat from the close proximity. “You really know how to flatter a lady. You deserve a gift from me.”

Reiner smirked. “A gift?”

“Of course. Close your eyes for the surprise.” She confirmed with a hint of seduction laced in her voice. Sasha silently thanked Connie for leaving and not witnessing this catastrophe. She watched as Reiner did as told and began to lean closer. Her hand quickly searched for the doorknob before she ended up kissing Reiner.

It had occurred all at once. Sasha opened the door and moved out of the way just as Reiner lost balance and fell out the door. She had also shoved him on his butt with her boot for good measure. Reiner ended up falling in the dirt.

“I hope that you enjoyed the gift.” She called out to him and nodded over to Bertolt with his group in the background. Sasha internally rolled her eyes when she saw the band. “Oh and Reiner.” She waited until Reiner looked her way.

“My answer is no.” She smirked and slammed the door shut.
