… how about a covered glass mustard pot and spoon in the form of a bull sticking its tongue out? Manufactured by Atterbury & Co., ca. 1888, in the collections of the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia.

The Reveal
The object from yesterday’s identify-the-item post is a bird seed box. Every well-appointed birdcage in well-to-do Victorian homes would have one. This piece, from the collections at the Chrysler Museum of Art, is attributed to the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company of Massachusetts, and was made between 1826 and 1888.
Thanks to everyone who played along. Guesses included a perfume bottle or bottle stopper, a sconce, and a bottle for oils. The best guess submitted was from @brucespencer, who suggested it might be a laudanum bottle. One has to keep one’s stash somewhere.

Kousa [Japanese] dogwood (Cornus kousa) at the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia.
Kousa dogwood is a widely planted ornamental landscape tree. It is resistant to the fungus that causes the leaf anthracnose and blighting that has decimated native dogwood trees (C. florida) in eastern woodlands.

Norfolk KeelsbySam Gilliam, at the Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk Virginia.
The work comprises large panels of draped, unstretched canvas painted with acrylics. The panels are suspended from the skylight in the museum’s Huber Court. It was commissioned for the space in 1998.
