catasters:

Rating:Not Cute

As always, predator and prey interactions are not cute, especially cats interacting with birds, as cats carry a bacteria called Pasteurella multocida. This bacteria is fatal to birds, particularly fowl, as it is the cause of fowl cholera, a fatal disease with no cure. Additionally, chickens are big enough to injure the cat if it starts a fight. When faced with danger, chickens are not always prone to fleeing, and many will choose to fight back instead, especially ones like these that clearly don’t consider the cat something to be afraid of.

You can also tell that these are commercially raised laying birds, as they have had the upper portion of their beaks docked off (called “debeaking”) to prevent them from injuring one another. This practice is performed around 1 day of age, but is done without anesthetic, and has been banned in several countries as a cruel practice. While the very tip of the beak is like a fingernail, most of the beak is more like a finger, making debeaking akin to declawing in cats: something that is still widely done but becoming less acceptable as science studies the long term effects and chronic pain that accompanies it. When better alternatives exist that stop the negative behaviors entirely, such as improving their living conditions particularly to include more space, debeaking is a cruel option.

“That’s the spot”

(via)

Rating:Not Cute

While parrots are generally fine to be on their backs (and may do so themselves for fun) and this bird does not appear to be distressed, under the wings and on the belly touching/petting is courtship/sexual behavior that should be avoided in order to prevent sexual frustration (and the undesired behaviors associated with this) in psittacines. Perhaps @is-the-parrot-video-cuteor@is-the-parrot-vid-cute would be so kind as to give some more specific information.

It’s definitely not the right place to be touching/stroking like that, while it is beneficial to get your bird used to people handling its wings because it can be helpful at the vet, this is not a good way to do it. If a bird rolls over like this it most likely wants to playfight, not be pet.

New friendship

Rating:Not Cute

This is a wild Willie Wagtail being territorial toward this pet rabbit. It is unlikely to actually harm the rabbit, but domestic rabbits often carry Pasteurella multocida, a bacteria that is deadly to birds. Calling them “friends” is both inaccurate and anthropomorphization that may encourage others to allow this kind of interaction when they shouldn’t.

Ok no @everythingfox

Stop promoting wild animals being kept as pets.

Stop promoting wild animals wearing clothes.

Stop promoting wild animals interacting with domesticated animals.

This is not healthy, this is not cute, this is not responsible.

This is dangerous, sets a harmful precedent, and supports the widespread abuse, confinement, and neglect of wild animals.

PSA, if you’re watching a “”“cute”“” animal video, and it has monkeys or primates in clothes?

That should be an IMMEDIATE red flag that this video is NOT CUTE.

By uncritically spreading this video and others like it, you are encouraging the exotic pet trade, animal abuse, animal endangerment, and poaching.

Monkeys and primates are not pets. They are not domestic. They should not be dressed up in clothing and lauded as cute little babies. They are wild animals that when being used as props like this, are probably living in squallid unsafe conditions with little to no access to veterinary care, because guess what! You can’t roll up to your local veterinary office with a monkey and expect them to be able to help you with anything.

GIRL??????

Rating:NOT CUTE, DANGEROUS

This is a Portuguese Man O’ War, a hydrozoan that is often called a jellyfish, and more importantly, can sting just like one. Their venom is incrediblypotent, and both severed tentacles and dead specimens can inflict painful stings. In the bestcase scenario, their sting will cause excruciating pain and long, open welts for a few days. In the worst case scenario, their sting can cause fever and shock, or allergic reactions, which have been known to result in death. You should neverdirectly handle a man o’ war, especially not with bare hands in a cup like this.

If you are stung by a man o’ war, immediately seek medical attention. Common “household remedies” like vinegar can actually worsen stings, and there is no way to tell how someone will react to a sting.

Equally as important: Apparently this person picked up the man o’ war to save it because the strong wind kept pushing it back on shore.

Don’t bring wildlife in distress into your home if you don’t already have experienceworking with it. You are most likely not saving it. If you don’t know the amount of salinity, oxygen, filtration, or nutrition necessary to keep a siphonophore alive and healthy, and if you can’t even tell the difference between a sick, healthy, live, or dead individual, don’t try to play hero.

In order to save this man o’ war, the person would likely have to release it at an entirely different beach. These animals can be “right handed” or “left handed,” depending on which direction they angle their float while drifting, and, depending on wind direction, animals with either handedness may be more likely to beach themselves. Because they have no way to change directions, but just float around somewhat passively, it’s believed that this handedness is an evolutionary advantage so only parts of the population may get stranded.
