i’m such a huge fucking fan of having and using magic requiring effort. whether mental, physical, or both. i’m so fond of magic systems that make you sweat, bleed, cry and get your hands dirty when you use them. i love it when powers are earned, not inherent, through years of study and/or exercizing them like a muscle. and i love it when a seemingly effortless display of power is terrifyingbecause of this.

Summary: On her way to Aretuza, Yennefer stumbles across a familiar face.

Notes: A s2 fix-it, because there are never enough of those LOL. I messed a bit with the timeline to make them meet: Geralt and Ciri are still travelling after Yennefer is freed after the encounter with the Deathless Mother, and they stumble across one another. Enjoy!

She needs a horse.

As stubborn as she may be, she’s tired and sore, and she can’t fathom walking the entire way to Aretuza.

The problem is, of course, that she doesn’t have the money to buy a horse, nor does she have anything to trade. She could perhaps make an offer of labour somewhere, but it’d take a consistent amount of time to accumulate enough coin for what she needs, and she has no patience for it. She needs to get there, and soon.

Her solution is not the noblest, but it’s probably the best option she has at the moment.

It isn’t all that difficult to find a target in the form a girl, standing alone at the outskirts of a village, right next to a beautiful bay horse. She seems a little nervous, and as she approaches her Yennefer can’t help feeling a little guilty for targeting her, but she has no magic, she can’t afford to go after anything but the easiest prey.

“Hello,” she says, with a friendly smile. She hasn’t exactly formulated a plan, but the girl looks young, with a bit of luck she might be naïve enough to let her have the horse without any need for her to force her hand.

That hope gets quickly crushed, because the look that the girl gives her radiates distrust. Holding tight onto the horse and moving a step closer to it, she’s staring at Yennefer like she’s trying to scare her off. She already likes her, which is a pity.

“Who are you?” the girl asks, tightly.

Yennefer casually waves her off. “Just a passer-by,” she says, throwing another smile her way for good measure. “Are you from around here?”

“No.”

Not very talkative, is she? Though that’s probably understandable. She’s a stranger, and one with dubious intentions too.

She ought to speed this up, because the last thing that she needs is to drag this out long enough for someone to come along and try to keep her from getting that horse, and since the girl’s attitude tells her that gently nudging her into cooperating isn’t going to be a feasible option, it’s time for a change of tactics.

“Listen, I don’t want to hurt you,” she begins, her tone harder. “But I need—”

She doesn’t finish the sentence, noticing the girl’s eyes darting behind her and turning around by instinct, before she has even fully realized that there’s a presence behind her.

Her muscles already tensing up in anticipation for a fight, she comes face to face with Geralt instead, and everything comes to a halt.
