I have to give a shout-out to artist Gail Sibley (don’t think she has an Instagram?). Even though she works with soft pastels and I’m working in oil pastel, her blog at howtopastel.com has been really inspirational since I discovered it in the past couple of months and has helped make some painting concepts really click. Not saying my work is turning out super amazing, but it’s helping me get back to enjoying the process of learning and trying things and doing daily exercises, instead of the unnecessary stress it’s so easy to fall into with art where you get caught up only in how good the end result is or feeling like everything needs to be the greatest thing you’ve ever made, if that makes sense.

Another observational painting study; this one was done with Sennelier oil pastels on a watercolor underpainting (pic 2). I meant to take more progress shots again, but I got caught up in the actual painting and forgot!

Another pastel painting study. This time I tried something new (for me) - doing an underpainting using Nupastels washed with alcohol (2nd pic). The rest show oil pastel process. Pretty cool effect and it’s nice to get the paper covered more thoroughly with the initial value setup! Am going to try this process again but with a watercolor underpainting to see how the results compare. (Thanks @salinatrevino for giving me this Pikachu wind chime; it’s nice to have cute things around to paint! haha)

Been trying to improve my color and value painting skills by doing little observational oil pastel studies lately. For some reason I feel like I understand it better when using traditional media instead of working digitally. Plus, always nice to have a little “assignment” I know I can get through quickly and get results!
