Ok so one of the things we were all wondering after last episode was in what way does Zerxus, this quiet humble man unsure of his job and frightended of his dreams, fit in thematically to the arrogance of all the other characters? Tonight it seems like we got out answer.

Because Zerxus sees himself on an equivalent emotional level to the gods. He doesn’t respect divinity, and what that really means is he thinks he can change the mind of the lord of hells. At first, I thought he was just insane for not having heard how much Asmodeus is a bad guy, but then Zerxus implored him to think of his son, the city, and to spare them some day. And I realized that Zerxus is showing kindness not from a place of naïveté, but from one of trust and compassion and, yes, arrogance. Zerxus thinks he can make The Lord of Hells a forgiving person through kindness and understanding.

#holy shit zerxus is caduceus without the faith in the gods#like…if caduceus wasn’t such a devout follower of the wildmother; he’d very likely do the same thing#he’s got so much compassion and kindness for others and an incredible arrogance that comes from that#because he (caduceus) has so often been the ‘wise’ one; the reliable and steady person that everyone else leans on#and he comes to internalize that; to see himself as wiser and more emotionally mature than everyone else#'wise friend’ becomes tinged with condescension; 'compassionate person’ slips into 'i (personally) will fix what’s wrong with you’#which is why he fails to understand trent at all (the dinner party speech; 'empathize’)#trent is someone neither looking for wisdom nor wanting to be fixed#and no amount of certainty on caduceus’ part about his own ability or authority is going to change that#critical role#exu calamity#critical role spoilers#exu spoilers via @thevalleyisjolly

i’m sorry your tags were just too good, this is something i’ve been trying to articulate about caduceus forever
