Thefirst rankings from the College Football Playoff committee were released Tuesday evening with some surprises among the top four teams.

At the top are two unbeaten SEC teams in Georgia and Alabama. The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide are in opposite order in major polls. However, committee chairman Kirby Hocutt noted Georgia’s wins against No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 16 Mississippi State as the reason for putting Kirby Smart’s team ahead of the Alabama, which has no wins among teams in the top 25 in the rankings.

A weekend filled with high-profile matchups produced plenty of changes in the Amway Coaches Poll, though once again, the top-ranked team is as it has been all season. Alabama, which had the weekend off, is still the unanimous No. 1.

After that, the shuffling begins. Georgia climbs to No. 2 after dispatching archrival Florida. The Bulldogs appear to be on a collision course with the Crimson Tide in a month for the SEC title. Ohio State, the big winner of the weekend thanks to its comeback win against Penn State, vaults from sixth to No. 3 ahead of Wisconsin. Clemson, which got back on track with a win against Georgia Tech, is back in the top five.

Alabama strengthened its grip on the No. 1 spot in the Amway Coaches Poll following its impressive performance against Florida State. The Crimson Tide claimed 60 of 65 first-place votes this week.

The rest of the top five looks a bit different with the Florida State loss.

Ohio State retained the No. 2 position. But the Buckeyes picked up only two No. 1 votes, down from five in the preseason poll, after a slow start against Indiana. Clemson, which easily handled a tune-up with Kent State, climbed to No. 3 and retained three first-place nods. Penn State, equally impressive in its opener against Akron, vaulted to No. 4 ahead of Southern California.

There are only two factors preventing an individual team from finishing undefeated in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

One is statistics: The odds of perfection decrease as more games get added to the road to the national championship — and as illustrated by Alabama in 2016, the last game is always the hardest.

The second is history. In the past decade, just four Power Five teams have completed a perfect season: Alabama in 2009, Auburn in 2010, Ohio State in 2012 and Florida State in 2014.

But finishing the regular season unbeaten? Maybe that’s another story.

From top to bottom, it’s hard to find a more talented roster — maybe at Alabama, but nowhere else. The expectations are high for a reason. But with Urban Meyer, a fifth-year senior quarterback and a change in offensive style, the Buckeyes seem ready to notch yet another College Football Playoff berth.

Biggest games

►Vs. Oklahoma, Sept. 9

►Vs. Penn State, Oct. 28

►At Michigan, Nov. 25

Three players to know

1. CB Kendall Sheffield. The junior-college transfer certainly looks the part of Ohio State’s next first-round defensive back.

2. WR Campbell. While more will be asked of Campbell in the passing game, don’t sleep on his major impact as the Buckeyes’ primary returner

3. DE Nick Bosa. The younger Bosa brother — after his older brother, Joey — is the program’s next all-everything defensive end.

Malik Hooker is another rookie that has taken the league by storm so far this season. If you watch college football then you most likely knew who he was before he became a Indianapolis Colt back in April. Hooker played his college football at one of the best football schools in Ohio State or The Ohio State as they call it. Playing for the Buckeyes and playing for a top 5 college football team in…

Joey Bosa is already an elite NFL pass rusher and its only year 2. Honestly, you could probably say he was an elite pass rusher as a rookie. He went through a lot of drama as a rookie for the Chargers when they were still in San Diego. It’s not unheard of but he had some contract talk difficulty and didn’t sign his rookie deal until August 29, 2016, and after he signed his deal he couldn’t play…

Some people might think its too early to say this but Marshon Lattimore looks like he’s a shutdown corner already. Sometimes it takes rookie cornerbacks a little while to get used to the NFL level of speed and for them to actually be able to perform at a high level but over the last few years, it feels like rookie cornerbacks have come into the NFL and performed right away. Jalen Ramsey might be…

Ohio State’s Electric Motorcycle Takes On a Punishing Mountain Course

This year an all-student electric motorcycle team from Ohio State University, hoped to set a new course record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Pikes Peak, Colorado, with their Buckeye Current bike. The challenging course rises a punishing 1,440 meters over just a 20-kilometer course, and that meant the bike’s design had to tradeoff delivering power and storing energy. The team chose to give priority to power so that they could tackle tight turns and blaze up the hill, storing just enough to get up the hill. (They decided they would walk the bike down afterwards, if they had to.)

During the four days leading up to the race, the team ran head on into several last-minute engineering crises, including a burned out noisemaker—required of all e-vehicles, so that errant pedestrians could hear them coming. The fix: an $8 car alarm.

More serious was the tendency of the motor to cut out, which forced the professionl driver, Rob “The Bullet” Barber, to reset the system. The initial fix was a workaround circuit, but when the power cutouts became more frequent the team realized they had a fundamental problem, traced to a failure of the inverter, which turns the battery’s direct current to the alternating kind. Two days before the race was to be held, the bike would not start—and the vendor of the inverter was deep into the weekend on the other side of the world.

The team pulled yet another all-nighter, found the culprit—a circuit that had been misaligned and whose fuses had thus blown out—and repaired the damage. On Saturday, they got the bike working at full capacity at a local track. Twelve hours later they brought the bike to the base of the mountain.

Watch the bike and action and find out how it finished the race in this video.
