an animatic I made this weekend about who Hunter was sending flapjack pics to in “Reaching Out” ! it was really fun to try to keep to the TOH board style!
On the one hand, the oldest book we own is from 1635 and thus an absolutely incredible prop for some final [Caleb?] Wittebane cosplay photos, on the OTHER hand the book in question is a copy of Hooker’s Ecclesiastical Polity which was, amongst other things, written as a refutation of Puritanism, so actually it doesn’t suit the Wittebanes all that well, on the OTHER other hand it does feel like the Wittebane in question might not have been particularly into the whole Puritan thing to begin with, and on the LAST other hand what I am contemplating doing is taking selfies with a theological book well over a century older than the country I live in while dressed as a fictional character from an animated series and I’m quibbling over denominational differences.
I have so many hands and I love the human experience.
Thinking more about Raine and Darius’ friendship when they were both at Hexside because like. I’m not sure it feels quite right to me for them to have been super close back then – friends, yes, absolutely, just in a somewhat more casual/impermanent way seeing as it didn’t seem to have lasted beyond their time at Hexside – but there isone scenario that works quite well for me.
We know Darius had some kind of falling out with Alador and Odalia (who seem to have been his closest friends as a teen), and while Raine and Eda obviously remained close and dated into their early 20s or so, Eda ended up dropping out of school sometime after she was cursed and wouldn’t have been around Hexside much. So you’ve got two witches who formerly had extremely close relationships with other kids at their school that abruptly – and in Raine’s case especially, pretty traumatically – became social loners.
I feel like that could very easily evolve into sticking to each other until one or both of them graduated because hey, we’re the only two who don’t really have anyone to sit with at lunch anymore and it’sawkward and people are gossiping about both of us, and out of everyone I know you sort of get where I’m at right now and why I’m sad about it and do you maybe want to come over and study sometime before finals? Yeah? Okay, cool, bring some snacks.
Which. Them having a sort of teenage friendship-of-convenience borne out of going through simultaneous emotional rough patches (Darius coping with the rejection of people he was previously close to and Raine still spending lots of time with Eda, but missing her at school and worrying a lot about her health all of a sudden) seems like the right flavor of Bonding Experience for the two of them, and is sweet and sad in a way that makes me appreciate the idea of them being rebels together in the present day a little extra.
Belos turning out to be a Puritan is the funniest thing that could have happened to our household as fic writers very invested in bringing that history into our writing because you have:

Me, raised oppressively Protestant, was at two different churches 3-4 days a week during my teen years and also multiple classes/clubs/even a summer camp where we regularly memorized verses and Biblical trivia, competed in an event called “Bible quizzing” for several years
So now I am our Font of Knowledge for any religious details when writing the guy and we keep having conversations where she asks, like, “Hey, is Philip a Biblical name, too?” and I go “Oh yeah, he was one of the disciples” and I am regularly losing it about the fact that this is Relevant To The Owl House
