Jimin has noticed by now that he’s kind of stuck with you now.

After a good checkup at the hospital they decided it’s best for you to stay with someone you trust- Jimin in this case, who happily agreed to look after you for the time being. Theres a bandage covering your left forearm- keeping the scratches underneath clean and protected from any dirt. You’re also wearing a new, proper collar- for now with the police logo on it to signal that you’re currently under government protection. It’s a lot better than the grimy old thing they’ve found at your former ‘home’.

“say, sweetheart?” Jimin gains your attention as you sit in the small room provided for questioning of witnesses- a way more friendly and less threatening environment than the interrogation rooms. “back at your home- was it always you hybrids and your owner?” he asks, and you shake your head, while he brushes out the knots of your tail- the action strange to you, as you’ve never had someone do that for you.

“I lived with an old man before.” you admit quietly. “he was nice- but he got too old to take care of me.” you tell him. “that’s how I met lady J.” you explain, and he nods. Based on the testimonies of the other hybrids, they all called her simply 'Lady J’ and nothing else. “when I came with her, the others were already there. We fought a lot.” you admit, and Jimin nods.

“when did.. The house become so cluttered?” he wonders, and you shrug as you watch him work so gently and carefully, trying not to pull on the hairs too much, even at the knotted parts.

“I dunno.” you mumble. “it was always like that, I think.” you say, and he hums a reply, making sure just to go one step at a time with you. “When can I go home?” you ask him, and he stops in his motions just for a split second, before he continues.

“we’re gonna get you into a new home soon darling, don’t worry.” he reassures.

“But Lady J will get mad if we’re not home.” you worry, holding his wrist still now. “I don’t wanna go on the balcony again.” you quietly voice your fears, and jimin puts the brush down before he pets your ears- hands moving to hold your face tenderly. He can only imagine the horrors you must’ve faced.

“She can’t and won’t hurt you anymore. I promise.” he tells you with urgency. “I told you I’ll protect you, right?” he asks, ans you nod. “see? And I stand by my word.” he reassures.

“so you’ll be my owner now?” you ask, and he chuckles a bit. Hybrids don’t technically need owners anymore- they can file for independence just kite he himself did years back when starting his police training. But for someone like you, that concept must be more than terrifying- at least Yoongi had explained it that way.

Victims like her can’t just be tossed out into freedom, just like you can’t give a starving person all the food they want. They need a slow recovery, steady progress, and a stable environment to heal. ’ the cat hybrid and doctor had told him after evaluating your state of mind for the records. ’Give her time, and security. She’s unable to make decisions for now, so maybe start by giving her choices first. Limit the options she has, and then expand as you make positive progress.’ the cat had explained. ’there’s no one I’d rather trust her with than you. You’ll do just fine.

And Jimin hopes, very strongly, that Yoongi is right about that.

He wants to do more than just fine.

“God the smell is awful.” officer Jeon says next to him, adjusting his facemask as they walk through the small apartment one last time.

“I know, I hate it too, but lets do one last search.” Jimin argues deep in thought, unsure what he’s looking for. Something tells him that he’s not yet found everything he needs to. It doesn’t make sense; five food bowls, five collars hanging in the entrance, five different hybrids described by the neighbours. And yet- they’ve only rescued four. Sure, there’s always the grim chance that one might’ve passed away- but Jimin isn’t one to give up without proof.

He needs to find you, no matter the state- no one deserves this, not even as their final resting place.

“just imagine living in this place..” Jungkook mumbles to himself, curled dog-tail unmoving as his ears are pinned back on top of his head. “awful. Thank god someone called.” he finishes with a sigh, trying not to step on anything that could hurt him or make him trip.

“did anyone check the balcony?” Jimin wonders, as Jungkook nods. “I can’t leave like this. She has to be somewhere.” he says more to himself than anybody else, gloved hands searching through a soiled mattress flipped against a wall. It’s then that he suddenly stills, grabbing onto his younger partner’s arm to keep him silent too- and both suddenly stare at a large dresser, closed up and unreachable due to all the clutter and mess. One look and they both know- there was a sound.

As Jungkook jumps over his own shadow and grabs onto the clutter, moving stuff out the way the best he can, Jimin helps eagerly, before he slowly opens the door.

At first, they feel disappointed at the sight; nothing but clothes and trash.

But then, he spots a tiny black tail, unmoving- and Jungkook instantly runs out the room to bark out that there’s another hybrid found to everyone outside the small apartment. “can you hear me?” Jimin worries, carefully moving things until he feels resistance at a blanket he pulls. “I’m officer Park, I’m here to help, you’re okay.” he carefully tells you- he can now see the dirty hair and flattened cat ears, body hidden by a dirty blanket you’ve wrapped around yourself. Black cat hybrid, female, malnourished and not often seen- it’s you.

He finally found you.

“it’s okay, I promise, nothing is going to happen.” he reassures, sitting down on a nearby box in front of the closet you’ve been barricaded in- a hand held out to Jungkook who’s got first aid in tow, telling him to stay back for the moment. “you’re not in trouble, okay?”

It takes a moment until you lower the blanket a little, and Jimin tears up a bit on the inside as he watches your terrified gaze scan the room. It’s clear you’ve got no idea what’s going on- just like the other hybrids already on their way to hospital.

“Are you hurt?” it’s a stupid question, but he needs to ask it anyways, although he known the answer to it already- most likely at least. With the state the entire apartment is in, it’s hard to imagine you’re fine. “look-” he tries a different route now, pointing at his hair and ears before he points at yours. “we match.” he smiles when he notices you finally seeming to get a grip on the situation, eyes searching for his tail it seems as he chuckles. “I’m a bat. Flying fox- so I don’t have a pretty tail like you.” he softly says, and he spots the tip of your said tail move a bit at that, curling and uncurling as if to check if it’s still yours. “but I give great hugs as a bat! Would you like one?” he asks, tries, and he’s scared you’ll deny.

“..M’ Dirty..” you mumble with a quiet voice and he sighs in relief a little at your response.

“don’t worry, I don’t mind.” he responds, and you’re visibly fighting a bit inside yourself, as he spots the way you chew on your dried and chapped lips a bit. “I promise I’ll keep you safe, okay? Nothing is gonna happen.” he tries again, keeping in mind the training they all went though prior to the raid they’ve done on this apartment. ’be patient. Keep reassuring. Better half a step forward than two steps back.’ Yoongi had lectured them, and he tries hard to follow his senior’s words.

It’s then that you move, and he instantly responds, carefully pulling you out the close with your blanket as well. “There we go.” he hums out, as you let yourself be held for a second. “You’re so strong. We’ll make it all better, promise.” he tells you again, before you nod into his shoulder- the sight of your home disappearing as he walks away from it with you in his arms.

Maybe he’s right.

Maybe.

The world outside is a little scary, you won’t lie.

Especially at night, when everything is dipped in the glow of the numerous neon lights all around, it’s scary, because in a way, you like how it looks. It’s not nice, friendly, or inviting- but it’s at least honest. People pass you by without a second glance, uncaring and wrapped up in their own life’s problems. The only thing you avoid are things related to the police- especially now, after finding several small posters hung outside of stores informing people of your escape.

At least they don’t call you a criminal.

You stop at one of those posters, reading what’s below the picture of you.

Please help find this young cat-hybrid.’

You wonder who in the police station had written this- or if it was a standard procedure just like everything else. You can’t really imagine someone going out their way to write that poster themselves. It’s probably just like every other one they put out.

Due to trauma we advise not to directly confront! Please use caution and call 112 or report any sightings to your nearby police station as soon as possible.’

So you can’t be out in the open anymore, you think to yourself, before you notice someone standing next to you. You start to chew on your lip, hoping the dirtied rain parka you found in an alley last night gives you enough cover- but judging by his next words, it’s useless. He probably saw your face in the reflection if the window.

“why did you run off?” Dr. Min asks, voice low as always as he keeps his hands in his pockets. Probably to look less menacing- he’s trained in behaviors and all that after all. You don’t understand half of it, but then again, you didn’t ever study either.

“because you lied.” you answer quietly, watching how two young girls inside the small convenience store buy some snacks for themselves. “all of you.”

“about what?” he wonders, keeping his eyes close to you. He’s never looking directly, never putting pressure on you- but you know the others are probably close by, so there’s no use in running anyway.

“everything.” you mumble. “officer park said he’d keep me. He won’t.” you scoff, watching the girls pay before they laugh to one another. “you’ll just put me in the next available home and forget about me.” you say more or less to yourself- though Yoongi catches it clearly.

“who said that?” he squints his eyes a bit in confusion, and it’s the first genuine reaction you get out of him. You sink shrug- and he sighs. “you know I can’t let you go right now, right?” you visibly begin to try and become smaller, body loosing every bit of strength as you nod.

“Are they gonna arrest me now?” you worry quietly, and Yoongi can’t help but crack a little, chuckling as he shakes his head.

“they’re all at home, it’s in the middle of the night. I’m off-duty as well.” he explains. “I have a comfortable couch you can sleep on tonight, and tomorrow morning, we’ll talk about what happened.” he tells you, making you a bit confused.

“you’re not taking me to the station again?” you ask, and he shakes his head.

“no. I’m taking you inside there-” he points into the convenience store, “-so you can choose something to eat. Then well go to my apartment, you can wash up, and sleep.” he tells you, and you nod after a moment.

The next day however, there’s a knock on Yoongis door pretty early- and he’s ready to commit a felony against anyone who just stole hours of his precious off-day-sleep, when it’s Jimin who’s on the other side of the door. “They said you found her.” he asks worriedly, and Yoongi nods, running a hand over his tired face. He’d honestly almost forgotten you were here- you’re extremely quiet.

“Be careful though- yesterday she said something about you lying to her about keeping her.” he scolds. “not sure what you said to her, but it broke her trust.” he informs the bat-hybrid, who quietly walks around the sofa where you sleep on. You’re asleep, bundled up in a blanket, your tail wrapped around yourself, and he can’t help but watch for a moment.

He knows the decision he made was definitely the right one. He’d been tasked go take care of you- but he could only do so much in hus position. Something had to be done, and he hopes you understand.

He really hopes you don’t hate him.

You’re not stupid.

Officer Park had been way too nice to begin with to be completely honest with it- there was no way he actually cared that much for a stranger like you just out of pure pity. And now, after all that shock and adrenaline has worn off completely, you start to see the real hints of what’s going on.

All the reports, questions, therapist visits- they’re just trying to get rid of you again.

It’s sadder than it should’ve been, for some reason. Maybe it’s your clingy nature that just got attached in the heat of the moment, or maybe it’s the fact that for a bit, everything seemed just so nice. Gentle touches, caring words, happy smiles and encouraging praise. It all left you more heartbroken than before- because now you’re just another stray again, waiting for someone to take you in again.

For another hell to begin.

You can’t be alone- you’re not as independent as officer Park or officer Jeon, who currently waves at you with a little grin on his face. Or maybe he’s got an owner? He seems nice enough- maybe you could live with him.

Someone like Jimin would never want you.

And it’s not just thoughts that want to pity or badmouth yourself- it’s because it’s realistic. He’s got a job, one that requires his full attention all day. And you’re a lot of work, still jumpy and scared of a lot of simple things. Someone like him doesn’t have time for a burden like you.

“Hey.” Jungkook squats down in front of where you sit on the bench near officer Park’s desk. “Jiminie is in a meeting, but he’ll be done soon. Do you need anything?” the shiba-Inu hybrid wonders, curled tail wagging a bit in a friendly manner before you politely shake your head. He seems to become a bit more serious at that, clearly having noticed your shift in behavior at this point. After all, he’s living with a former trauma victim- he knows how to pick up subtle signs by now.

You seem.. Detached. There’s no trace of any emotion in your face, as you simply sit there, no fear, no sadness, no longing eyes looking for Jimin around the office. Something’s off- and he needs to figure it out.

“are you okay?” he asks, and you nod- something he’d expected. “I see. I’ll tell Jimin to hurry.” he instead smiles, petting your head before you can protest about it. You watch as he knocks on the door of the meeting room where Jimin is sat in with his superior and Yoongi, before he enters and closes the door behind him. It’s hard to see through the cracks in the blinds, but it looks like the dog hybrid is talking to Jimin, the older officer’s eyes turning a bit more serious at whatever he’s telling him.

Are you in trouble?

You’re not sure, but your instincts instantly tell you to hide and find someplace away from all of this, best before he walks out the room and spots you.

The office building is rather large, and you’ve not explored anything yet- so you’re unsure where to go, what places could be best to hide. And it seems like luck is also not on your side either, as you hear Jimin’s voice in the distance. “you said she was waiting here? Where is she?” he seems angry.

Oh no.

You pick up your speed, leaving your shoes randomly in the hallway so you’re just on socks- you’ve learned that you’re way quieter this way, and considering you’ve got a bat and a dog hybrid on your tail, you need any advantage you can get.

It’s the staff toilets you walk in, closing the door behind you before you lock it. It’s not going to prove difficult for them to unlock it or break in, but it’ll buy you time at least- valuable seconds to think about your next steps. “Jimin!” Jungkook calls out- having probably found your shoes, as you hold your breath in the staff toilets. Maybe they won’t find you ins-

And then the door rattles.

“Kitten?” Jimin asks, and now your instincts are running on high speeds, taking over your entire body as adrenaline fills your veins. “It’s okay, everything’s fine!” he calls out, but you don’t hear it as the reassurance it is, but as a threat barked by Lady J back at your old home.

Come here, kitty kitty.’ she’d say. ‘I just want to talk.’

You’re done playing nice however, as you climb up one of the stall doors, hurting your fingers as the door moves and catches them in between the hinge for a second, making you hiss- but there’s no time to loose. The tiny window is easily slid open- and you somehow maneuver yourself to grab onto the ledge, socked feet struggling to find any grip on the wall as your tail thrashes around, desperate to hold any balance. It’s when you hear someone harshly banging on the door that your ears flatten against your skull.

They’re trying to break in now.

You squeeze yourself out the window, scratching open your shoulder on a loosened screw, before you drop down into the bushes below, a harsh landing not even slightly softened by the foliage and plants, knocking the air out of you for a good second, before you regain control over your limbs again.

And not a moment too early it seems, as the door opens inside the room above, both officer’s boots now moving around before you can hear Jungkooks urgent voice. “Jimin, there!” he says, and before you can even think twice, you run off into the foresty area behind the police office, uncaring of the twigs biting at your ankles.

This- this was finally freedom.

Not whatever lies they’ve been trying to feed you inside that place.

“Heyyyy!” Jimin greets me happily as I walk into the practice room.

“Hello, there.” I smile and open my arms just before he barrels into me.

“Hey, (y/n).” Jungkook waves a hand at me and the others give me smiles and waves as well.

I wave back with Jimin still holding onto me. “Hey guys.”

“Did you get done with the proposal?” Jimin asks, pulling back but keeping his hands on my shoulders.

I nod, my body still buzzing with nervousness. “I don’t know if we’ll get it though.” I sigh.

“Why not?” Jimin tilts his head to the side, “You worked so hard on it. i’m pretty sure that kind of hard work will get picked.”

“The other proposal is made by Ashton, the CEO’s son.” I shrug and my shoulders want to cower away from the thoughts that flood my mind.

“What does that matter?” He wonders and pulls me out of the way of the door.

“He, uh, has often pulled strings for his son.” I scratch the surface of the real reason.

“What does that mean?” He asks in a low voice, keeping the conversation from curious ears.

“It’s nothing.” I smile at him, wanting to keep my more serious work troubles away from him.

“No, I want to know.” He pushes with concerned eyes, “Is he hurting you?”

I hesitate before shaking my head, “Not physically.” I sigh, “He just makes it a point to berate me and my team, and degrade our work.”

“That little shit.” Jimin says through gritted teeth.

“It’s fine, Jimin.” I reassure him, “My manager told me that our proposal is really good and all the other department managers like my proposal better, so I shouldn’t worry. But I do.”

“You’re nervous. That makes sense. You worked for weeks on this.” Jimin nods, “I mean, if the managers are all on board with your proposal then maybe that little shit will be put in his place. When do they decide?”

“They’re having the meeting today but I don’t know when they’ll inform us of the decision.” I tell him with an attempt at a reassured smile.

“You’ll let me know the outcome?” He asks, “I want to celebrate with you when they choose your proposal.”

My smile changes to cover up my doubt and, from what I can see, Jimin buys it. “For sure.”

He smiles and gives me a cheeky smile. “Good.” He presses a soft kiss to my cheek.

Jin claps his hands loudly at us and Jimin whips around, “Yes?” He drags out the word dramatically.

“Chop, chop. I have dance moves to learn.” Jin says and puts his hands on his hips, giving back the sass that Jimin gave him.

I grab Jimin’s hand and drag him over to where the other guys are standing together. “Here he is.” I tell them with a playful smile, and then I turn to him, “I’m going to be watching you for mistakes.”

“Oh, I’m so scared.” He rolls his eyes and shakes his hands out by his face. I shove his shoulder with a laugh.

“Then you better do well.” I stick out my tongue at him before sitting down against the mirror.

Crossing my legs in front of me, I watch their rehearsals with most of my attention on them. The rest of my attention feels for any notification on my phone that my hands grip tightly.

I normally would enjoy BTS’s rehearsals but today, I’m just too nervous and anxious to thoroughly enjoy it. Just as my team and I were finishing our day, Ashton decided to shout across the whole floor and berate us. Specifically our chances that our proposal would be chosen. He shouted that we had just wasted countless hours, created garbage, and that we should be embarrassed that we submitted the proposal to the board.

The whole thing just put me in a constant nervous state. My body feels like a electricity current is running through my whole body, buzzing like I just finished an hour long ride on one of those old metal scooters over bumpy black tar.

After twenty minutes of watching the boys dance, pause, talk through, learn, and then start dancing again, my phone starts to vibrate with a call and I literally jump to my feet. Seeing my manager’s name on my screen, I quickly catch Jimin’s gaze and motion that I’m going into the hallway. Not waiting for his response, I open the door and shut it before answering the call.

“Hey, Lisa.” I breathe out, my heart pounding in my head as I walk down the hall, away from the practice room. “What’s up?” I ask, leaning back against the wall.

“Hey, (y/n).” Lisa says with a heavy sigh and my heart drops below the basement floors of the building. “The meeting just ending and they made a decision.” She says.

“Not good?” I ask trying to lessen the blow.

“I’m sorry.” She sighs again, “The CEO overruled all the board members and chose Ashton’s proposal.”

My eyes close in disappointment and my shoulders sag under the weight of Lisa’s words.

“But you should know that all the board members voted for your proposal over Ashton’s.” Lisa continues talking when I don’t say a word, “You and your team did such good work and you should be proud of that.”

“Yeah, I, uh, yeah. Thanks for letting me know, Lisa.” I tell her, wanting to get off of this phone call as soon as possible.

“An email’s being sent out to your team so you won’t have to tell them.” She informs me, “I’m sorry, (y/n).”

“Thanks, Lisa.” I thank her and then hang up.

A cry hiccups through my chest and I bend my knees to sit on my heels with my back still pressed against the wall. I squeeze my eyes tighter and will myself not to cry. Not here. Not now.

I really thought we were going to be chosen. My whole team worked so hard. They’re going to be crushed when they read that email.

Groaning, I let my head fall forward and my arms rest on my knees, phone still clutched in my hand. I sigh heavily and a wave of anger for the CEO washes over me.

How could he choose his son over a really good proposal? The entire board voted for ours but he chose his son.

My phone starts to ring with another call. Thinking it’s one of my team members, I answer it without looking at the caller ID.

“Hello?” I answer the call, keeping as much disappointment out of my voice as possible.

“HA!” A male voice shouts on the other end of the line and I recognize the mocking tone immediately: Ashton.

My jaw involuntarily clenches in anger.

“I TOLD YOU I’D WIN OVER YOU.” Ashton says with a cocky edge to his voice, “MY PROPOSAL IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN YOURS. AND I DIDN’T EVEN PUT IN AS MUCH WORK. HA. HA. HA.”

Running a hand slowly through my hair, I slowly pull the phone away from my ear as tears line my closed eyes. Even though my phone is away from my ear, I can still hear Ashton’s voice.

“I knew you weren’t that good at your job.” He cackles, “You weren’t ever good but this is just proof. And it shows that your ideas are trash. That team of yours can’t even tell you how bad your ideas are. You really must be a shitty leader.”

The first tear falls and lands on my pant leg, creating a single dark spot.

“Unless, the proposal ideas came from them and you were too dumb to see how awful they were.” Ashton continues, “That’s gotta be it! You’re just dumb!”

Just a sob pushes past my lips, the phone is yanked out of my hand. I look up as Jimin turns the call on speaker and talks back to Ashton. I can feel the anger rolling off of his shoulders.

“Hi, who is this?” He asks, his voice dangerously low.

“Uh… isn’t this (y/n)’s number?” Ashton repeats the question, unsure of himself.

“I don’t know a (y/n). But you sound like a shitty person.” Jimin lies through gritted teeth. “What kind of self absorbed, sad, 10-year-old man are you? You really think that you’re being cool by calling someone dumb? Or their team members? Where the hell is your humility? Where the hell is your humanity?” He scoffs, “Oh, no, I got it, you must not have a brain.” He says before quickly ending the call.

A few more tears managed to slip down my cheeks but I’m too stunned at Jimin’s outburst to wipe them away. Jimin tucks my phone in his back pocket and turns to face me after exhaling. Noticing my tears, he quickly knees down next to me and wipes them away.

“Hey.” He almost whispers with a small comforting smile.

“I can’t believe that lame excuse for a man is the CEO’s son.” He says before wrapping me up in a hug. “Don’t listen to him. He speaks lies. You and your team are so smart. You worked so hard on that proposal and you should be nothing but proud about your work.”

I sniffle at his words and a few tears fall.

“You will keep your head high and not let that man’s words make you doubt yourself.” Jimin continues, rubbing a hand on my back. “Every word he said was false. Every single word. Someday karma will come for him. And I hope to god that you’re there when it strikes him down.”

I pull back with a choked laugh, “I don’t think I want to be around for that.” I tell him.

His hands rest on my cheeks and his thumbs brush away the fallen tears. “Either way, I still hope that karma takes him down in the cruelest of ways.”

Jimin smiles warmly at me, “You did so good. And I’m so proud of you.” He says and my heart swells. “So, so proud of you.”

I return his smile and take a deep breath. “Thank you.” I whisper.

“I’m always proud of you.” He states before leaning in to softly kiss my lips.

After resting my forehead against his for a second, I pull back and ask, “How much did you hear?”

“I heard enough.” He shrugs but I can hear just how much anger is laced in his voice.

“You heard it all.” I correct him and shake my head, looking down to my lap.

“Hey.” Jimin says and uses his finger to lift my chin back up, “Head high. You did really good work. Be proud of that.”

I nod, determined to make myself see that and believe it. “I did good work. My team did good work.”

“Exactly.” He encourages me.

I pull him in for a hug and rest my cheek on his shoulder, “Thank you, Jimin.”

“No need to thank me, dear.” He pats my back, “I will always do what is necessary.”

“Even if it means lying about who’s phone you’re answering?” I ask, releasing him from my embrace.

He chuckles and I love the sound. “I would pretend to be anyone to anyone who is bringing you down.”

“Noted.” I say with a genuine smile.

“If you’re up for it, we’re all going out to dinner tonight, if you want to join.” Jimin offers and stands up with a hand extended to help me up, “Oh, and Jungkook said he’s paying.”

I raise an eyebrow at him, “Did he say it or…?”

Jimin sighs, having been caught, “He lost a game so now he’s gotta pay up.”

“You guys are awful.” I shake my head at him.

“But you’re going to come, aren’t you?” He guess with a knowing look.

I slap my hand into his and smirk, “Hell yeah I’m going.”

Jimin pulls me up and wraps an arm around my waist protectively.

“Should we tell the guys so we can go show this Ashton jerk a lesson?” He whispers as we walk back down towards the practice room.

I slap his chest with a laugh, “What happened to waiting for karma?”

“Just offering to speed up the process.” He laughs.

You took a deep breath in when you finally stepped out of the airport, a small smile spreading on your face when you heard the language that you grew up with, but haven’t heard in years.

“There you are,” your childhood friend screamed in happiness, embracing you before you could even really realize who she was. After a second of initial shock, though, you hugged her as tightly as she did you, “Wow, I can’t believe you’re finally here.”

“Me neither,” you chuckled.

You grew up in South Korea and lived here till you were a teenager, then your parents decided to move abroad due to a job opportunity. It was… hard. Leaving everything you knew and loved so much behind, but in hindsight, you were also glad for it. Because of the move, you were able to enroll in a fantastic university and were now looking at a bright future ahead of you… one that you would like to begin where it all started… here.

“I’m surprised you decided to stay in Seoul and not go to Busan,” she grabbed one of your suitcases and started walking towards her car.

“I’ll go there too, but I have a job interview on Tuesday here. I figured I’d stay the couple days, then drive down.”

“Lucky me, then,” she grinned from ear to ear.

You packed both of your suitcases in the trunk of her car, then got in.

“Thank you for picking me up, by the way,” you said as you put on the seat belt.

“Of course. Gives me the chance to catch up with you. Though there is this little party tonight that I thought we could go to. Maybe have dinner first, then go there?”

“Already?” you laughed, “You’re not even letting me letting me catch my breath, huh?”

“I haven’t seen you in ten years and from what you told me, you’re going to be really busy. I want to make the best out of it.”

You let out a laugh and nodded, “Alright. Let me just have a nap before that then.”

You talked about mundane things throughout the car ride, exchanged info on each other’s family, asked about job, university and friends… before the topic of relationships came up.

“You’re still single?”

“Yep,” you replied with a small smile, “Fresh start.”

She was quiet for a moment and you thought that the conversation was just over, but she actually carefully thought about how to word her next question, “Have you… spoken to… Jimin recently?”

“Jimin? Park Jimin?”

“Yes.”

“No… why would I?” you furrowed your eyebrows, “We broke up over ten years ago.”

She shrugged, “The two of you were serious and it seemed like you moving away hit both of you pretty hard. Just thought you might keep in contact with him after.”

“We did for a while, but once he debuted it got less and less. Haven’t talked to him inyears now,” you turned your head to look at her, “Why are you asking?”

“Well… you see… we still talk every now and again and we met up three weeks ago, the two of us and a bunch of others from class to have dinner and… I might have let it slip that you’re coming.”

“And?”

“He said he’d like to see you.”

Didn’t matter that you hadn’t talked to him in years, the moment you heard that, your heart started to beat faster. Did he still think about you every now and again? The one that you once thought was the love of your life?

When you moved, leaving him behind was the hardest thing. He was the biggest reason you wanted to stay and leaving broke both of your hearts. You promised you’d keep in contact and at least remain friends, but that didn’t work out.

Still… hearing that he might still think about you from time to time made you happy.

“That’d be cool. I’d like to catch up with him.”

She beamed immediately. There was no bad blood between the two of you, so she should have expected you to say yes, but you never know… a broken heart takes years to heal, if it ever even does.

Your friend dropped you off at your hotel where you instantly fell into bed when you checked into your room.

You had decided to meet up at 7, so you literally spent all day catching up on sleep before meeting her for dinner. It was just the two of you, super chill and nice with traditional Korean food that you haven’t had in years. At around 9, you decided to head to that party your friend had told you about before.

One thing she, intentionally, forgot to mention, was that it was only a small gathering with all the guys and girls from school that you used to be friends with that now lived in Seoul. It was only around ten people, all former friends that you were more than happy to see. A nice surprise… and an even bigger one when you were face to face with someone you hadn’t expected to see in such a place.

“Surprised?” Jimin laughed with a drink in his hand, “When I got the invite and heard you were coming, I had to come too.”

“Oh my god,” you couldn’t help but hug him. When your friend mentioned him before, you thought that you might be able to meet up for coffee in the next weeks, not that you’d see him the same day you’d arrive.

The crowd around you quickly dispersed, wanting to give you two the reunion you deserved.

Jimin wrapped his arms around you and held you tightly.

“Can’t believe you’re back,” he whispered, “I missed you.”

You didn’t reply, but you smiled and hid it in his shoulder, the tightening of your grip was answer enough for him, though.

You remained in this state for a while longer before you made your way to a free couch and while you were extremely grateful for everyone that was here, you couldn’t bring yourself to talk to anyone but Jimin. However, the others seemed more than okay with that. After all, everyone in this room spent years with the two of you when you were a couple. They knew how much you used to love each other and how heartbroken you were when the relationship ended.

“I’m sorry I haven’t texted for so long,” Jimin said eventually, “Life got… complicated.”

“That’s not what I’d call it,” you smiled, “You’ve achieved your dreams. I’m so proud of you. Really.”

“Wasn’t always my dream, you know?” he said quietly, but you could feel the honesty in his words and you knew what he meant by that. He quickly shook his head though and smiled again, “Anyway, now that you’re back we should hang out more. Seoul is so different from Busan… I can show you around.”

“Aren’t you a little too busy for that?”

“I’ll make time,” he grinned with wiggling eyebrows.

And so he did. You didn’t think he would find the time, but he did. Whenever he had a spare hour, he would call you and ask you to meet him for a coffee in this new and fancy café or walk around a neighborhood with so many fairy lights that you could swear you could hear the owners scream because of their electricity bill.

You had a lovely time together, really got to know each other again and were now at a point where you could call each other friends again… until one night, when the two of you spontaneously decided to drive down to Busan to surprise your family… and then also his, of course.

Before you did, though, you stopped at the beach to watch the sunset together.

“Feels like yesterday when we used to do this every week,” you said with a nostalgic smile.

“I wish it were,” he turned his head to look at you, “Things would have been very different if you had stayed.”

“You mean we’d be married with like five kids,” you snorted, referring to the many times that you thought you were pregnant because the two of you were too dumb to figure out proper protection.

“Yeah… don’t you regret it? Not living that life?”

The question surprised you, but you didn’t look at him, only at the ocean, “No point in regretting something like that. It happened and we now have to live with the life we got.”

Jimin looked down at his hands, playing with a ring on his middle finger, “What if it’s not the life we want, though?”

You finally looked at him, waiting a moment before asking: “You’re not happy?”

He let out a deep sigh, “I loved the last ten years. I loved every second of it. But seeing you again… being with you again…-” he looked up at you, “I don’t want to make the same mistake twice.”

“The mistake being?” your heart skipped a beat, knowing the answer before he even said it.

“Letting you go.”

“I’m not going anywhere, Jimin,” you knew what he was getting at, but you needed more confirmation.

He cupped your cheek, his thumb brushing over it, “I want to ask you to marry me… because I feel like you’re still the girl I feel in love with years ago. The last couple of weeks only showed me that nothing has changed between us.”

“I’d say yes.”

That surprised him. So much so that his mouth dropped open.

“You would?”

“You said it yourself. We spent years of our lives together… and now… it’s like nothing ever changed. Only that this time, we’re old enough to make our own decisions. Even if our parents will scold us for making this one, it’s still ours to make.”

Jimin let out a laugh, then he cupped your other cheek, slowly leaning over to you until you could feel his lips on yours.

It was only a soft kiss, but it was enough for the two of you to know that this was right. The feelings that you had when you kissed each other was like years ago only… more.

This was right.
