The conjunction “but” in Japanese is usually said as “けど” (kedo). This is usually when linking two parts of a sentence together.
Ex:
眠いだけどまだ起きてる
(I’m sleepy but I’m still awake/
Though I’m sleepy, I’m still awake)
そうですけど気にしない
(That’s true but I don’t care/
Though that’s true, I don’t care)

If it’s at the end, it usually suggests that the sentence is incomplete or adding to a previous sentence; not just by itself.
Ex:
そうですけど…
(That’s true, but…)
眠いだ。まだ起きてるけどね！
(I’m sleepy. Even though I’m still awake!)

For the most part, “but” used at the beginning of a sentence is said as “でも”(demo)
Ex:
でもそれはすごいずるいんだ！
(But that’s so unfair!)
でも彼はアメリカ人じゃないね？
(But he’s not American, right?)
