Portrait of Ginette Lantelme, was a French stage actress, socialite, fashion icon, and courtesan. Considered by her contemporaries to be one of the most beautiful women of the Belle Époque. This picture was taken in 1910. Sadly she died the following year: In early July 1911, Lantelme, her husband Edwards, and a few of their friends boarded Edwards’ yacht, L’Aimée. On the night of July 24/25, Lantelme disappeared, and a few days later her body was discovered in the waters of the Rhine River. The official verdict was that the actress had drowned as the result of a tragic accident. Lantelme was also most likely under the influence of cocaine at the time of her death. American Journalist Harriet Quimby was the first woman in America to be awarded a pilots license. and on April 16th, 1912, was the first woman to fly the English Channel. She was denied much of the glory of her achievement due to the sinking of the Titanic 2 days earlier which still dominated front page headlines. Three months later, on July 1, 1912 Quimby made her last flight at the Harvard-Boston Aviation Meet where she met with a tragic accident. She was flying in the Bleriot with William Willard when suddenly the plane went into a nose dive. Willard was thrown from his seat after which the aircraft flipped over, throwing Harriet out too. Both Quimby and Willard fell and died at Dorchester Bay. Ironically the aircraft landed with little damage. A Female Mason Perched High above Berlin (c. 1910). With the rise of industrialization, the number of German women who worked outside the home also increased. This usually meant factory work. But in some families with their own businesses, daughters also learned a trade so that they could help out: here, we see a master-mason’s daughter during the renovation work on the old city hall tower in Berlin.

colourised of Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright photographed in Cottingley, England, 1917. The fairies were featured in photographs taken by two cousins who lived in Cottingley, near Bradford in 1917. The pictures were seen by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who sued them to illustrate an article on fairies he had been commissioned to write in 1920. He later started writing a book on them but never finished it. Public reaction ranged from disbelief to a cult following. Interest in the fairies waned after 1921 and both girls lived abroad for some time. In 1966 a reporter from the Daily Express found one of the cousins, Elsie Wright, and after she said she thought she had photographed her thoughts the media became interested in the story again.
An academic, Joe Cooper, became captivated by the photographs in the 1970s.
He was obsessed with the story and decided to take up where Conan Doyle had left off. He spent more than seven years and a personal fortune on investigating.
