In this poem, Shaykh Bahāʾ al‐Dīn laments that unworthy people, never having endured any hardship, have the finest means and a luxurious lifestyle, complete with slaves at their service, while unworthy of being even a servant.

Rumi poem spotted on a Tehran house:

[Rumi to Shams:] “You’re the drop, you’re the sea, you’re kindness, you’re harshness,

you’re sugar, you’re poison, don’t torment me anymore!”

Persian poets often ‘reply’ to other poets by re-mixing their verses, either as a nod to the poet or as a rebuttal.

In this case, Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II (died 1481) is re-mixing a famous Hafiz (died 1390) line, which we have translated (see below).
