Earlier this week, police emptied the camp — which lies on the Greek border with Macedonia — after after a massive police action that began on Tuesday.
Now, the only people there are cleaning up what’s left behind.
Three days before Idomeni closed, reporter Jeanne Carstensen spoke with Makmoud Nakarch, a law student from Aleppo.
He had created a Syrian flat bread baking business underneath one of the train cars sitting at the station.
He was emblematic of the can-do attitude of so many of the refugees at Idomeni, she says.
And not only did he make good bread. He read her fortune, and that of Idomeni. He said that the police wanted people gone.
Just a few days later, they were.
Our reporter doesn’t know where Makmoud is today. He and his family could could be in an official camp, or they may have crossed over into Macedonia. Listen to her story here.
