i saw someone say on twitter that it doesn’t matter that israel doesn’t have same-sex marriage, because even if it did, it would still be a settler-colonial ethnostate. and while i agree with that on principle i wanted to point out that same-sex marriage can’t be legalized in israel, because we have no civil marriage. family law and the institutions concerned with it was entirely ceded to religious leaders in the status quo agreement before the founding of the state. that’s why israel doesn’t have interfaith marriage either: to marry you have to turn to the religious institutions you’re affiliated with, and the recognized religious institutions require that both parties be of the same religion. all of this is to say, the same institutional structures that uphold ethnic segregation are the reason israel will not have same-sex marriage. changing the theocratic components of israel is impossible as long as it exists in its current (zionist, settler-colonial) form and in fact things may be getting worse than before, seeing as the old secular elite is being replaced by a religious zionist elite

For what it’s worth gay marriage is actually a pretty bad metric to measure LGBT rights by. Israel’s universal health care pays for HRT and transitions as does the army. LGBT centers, resources, and youth orgs are literally state-funded–INCLUDING resources in Arabic and Russian. And Arab citizens of israels, many of whom self-identity as Palestinian, are equally entitled to access those treatments and resources.

You frame Israel as a safe haven from backwards homophobic Palestinians, and that the dismantlement of a settler state sitting on our stolen land wouldn’t be beneficial for Palestinians - tell me, does the state of Israel ask Palestinians whether they’re gay or not before demolishing our villages? Do they ask Palestinians if they’re gay or not before bombing homes in gaza? Do they ask Palestinians if they’re gay or not before attacking funerals or shooting children? I could go on, but the true answer is that it doesn’t matter if Palestinians are gay or not, if they’re Palestinian, their rights are already forfeit. For Gay Palestinians, what is added is homophobia.
