Do all of us have a “golden era”?
I was in my mid-20s when I started my business in the Pioneer Square area of Seattle. It was the center of cool where creatives ✍️ and innovators worked & played. We’d found a home where there were great clubs, restaurants,and similar people gathered. “Startups” wasn’t a word yet, but they were happening. Gordon Bowker (an original founder of Starbucks) was one the early supporters of the Weekly, a Seattle newspaper ️in my office building.
One of my friends from those days was Jerry Gay, a Pulitzer prizewinning photographer who founded “Picture Magazine.” We just spoke this week & I dug up these photos he shot of Chihuly Gardens for a story I was working on in 2012.
My office had a leather couch, ️ chrome & glass furniture and a Bang & Olufsen stereo incessantly playing jazz albums. Roger Downey, one of the Weekly writers, ⌨️ called me “Jazz baby.”
People in the building who drank coffee ☕chipped in & we shared the cost. Roger insisted we always buy “Yuban,” a canned coffee that was more expensive than Folgers and Maxwell House.
Judy, the Weekly office manager thought it would be funny to fill the Yuban can with “Brand ✖️” to see what would happen. Roger didn’t notice. How’s that for the power of advertising?
For many, our 20s & 30s is the golden age and a fun time in our lives.

This coming Thursday catch @theblacktones at #stayhappycentral
The Black Tones was started by twin siblings Eva and Cedric Walker. Born and raised in Seattle Washington in a family of educators and dancers, they are first generation Seattleites as their entire family is originally from New Orleans, LA which has helped shape their musical style of blues and soulful rock n roll. Eva is the guitarist singer/songwriter and harmonica player and Cedric is the drummer of the group. They are joined by blues bass player Giordan Montero, who has been with the group from its start. The Black Tones have opened for bands such as NighTrain (Seattle), Hot Panda (Canada), The Pauses (Florida), The Rockonigles (California) and many others. What they consider to be one of their biggest honors was getting to perform with the students of School of Rock Seattle as they performed their song “Woman in Black” in a showcase the school put on, dedicated to front women in rock n roll. You can also catch Eva in the upcoming film documentary Nice & Rough: Black Women in Rock. You can currently download and stream their EP on the Seattle Public Library Playback Series website.

Nikita Ares was born in the Philippines and moved to Seattle when she was 16.
Here she has stayed to study painting at Cornish College of the arts.
Using paint, pastels, crayons, pencils, her fingers, her hands and brushes Nikita is mesmerized by the colors of nature. “I see my emotions in the lingering and developing colors and shades of nature and what is around me. Like my feelings these colors are always subtly changing and developing to be something new. Nature makes me feel, these feelings that I have in that moment, is what I show in my work.”

Raven Mathews, a Seattle native has the energy of a rock concert, a rave, a river, and a boulder. He makes music he wants to make and performs how he wants to perform.
He has released his third album, Disco Christ which Seattle weekly states is a “genre-bending record (that) adheres to no conventional framework and makes no attempt to fit into any small-minded categorical boxes.”

Connie Fu’s work addresses the experience of belonging to one or more cultures, and the constant negotiations that one must engage in to gain a fuller understanding of the experience itself. By weaving recognizable visual elements from classically American and Chinese imagery into compositions informed by the rhythms of poetic language, she creates luscious, inviting spaces that serve as a hopeful vision for cross-cultural harmony both for herself and for the community. Connie lives and works in Seattle, WA
