The way I see it, when you have this kind of relationship with a parent, you’ve actually been missing them your entire life without realizing it. They were never who you believed, or who you needed them to be, so that hole in your heart was always there, you just didn’t know it.
Yes absolutely this. I think Luther truly believed that there was more to Reginald, that maybe he did see something from him that made him believe he loved Luther. That there really might have been some honest emotion from him, and while he realizes now what Reggie was - like what you say, that retroactive hurt - and I think he has a part of him that holds onto what little good he got as proof.
Out of all of the siblings Luther’s really the one who knew Reggie the best, for all that really amounted to (which still isn’t much). In season 1 Luther says that he and dad would actually talk and spend time together, and for as cold as Reggie was to Luther when he was grown up, there had to have some moments between them to encourage Luther’s devotion. Not that this is defending Reg or saying he was capable of sentimentality, but it’s like how he gave Vanya the violin. For all his secret motives and machinations, he did do something genuine for his child. Luther probably had more moments with him than the others, even if they were few and far between. I think if he said one kind word to Luther, Luther saw what a big deal that’d be and he’d hold that very dearly (and still does).
So yeah, finding out about Reggie will color Luther’s current thoughts and will always leave that hole in his heart, and I also think he will still believe - or choose to believe rather - that there was some kind of actual truth, or potential for truth. I think Luther will always think, “but he was my dad”.
One unhealthy relationship dynamic that’s not really talked about is Cas having to sever ties with other angels because Dean doesn’t like or trust them and views it as a betrayal for Cas to associate with them and this goes on to the point where the only people Cas is able to have a relationship with are those in Dean’s circle
