This is @melynda_von_wayward who I first met in 2014 in Melbourne. Melynda is an artist, writer, historian and photographer. She put together an amazing website full of information, archival material and interviews from Melbourne’s Punk history 1977-1987 www.punkjourney.com . In 2014 she also curated an epic exhibition in St Kilda by the same name… Melynda describes punk as “a mixture of fashion, an anti-establishment attitude, style, colour, music and a DIY ethos” Her favourite Punk Girl “Wendy O Williams, but I am also inspired by the Australian women of punk from the 70’s and 80’s - they were doing wager was unheard of for that time and in a man’s world” #punkgirlsbook #punkgirl #melyndavonwayward #punkjourney #punkjourneystkildaandbeyond (at L1 Studios)

Maureen O'Brien. 1962-2016. #punkgirlsbook is dedicated to Maureen who sadly passed away two years ago. Maureen was the founder of the infamous Melbourne punk pub crawl and also worked as a live music promoter working with Prophagandi and No Use for a Name. What struck me most about Maureen in our chats and emails back and forth was her love of writing poetry and her extreme connection with her family. “I have the best parents in the world” she told me. Maureen had some very dark times but found a lot of positivity and fun in the punk scene, she also spoke of saving at least one dozen lives saying “my favourite thing is helping people, I am not a bystander.”
Here is a snippet of Maureen’s email to me in 2015;
“Remember, I write about reality, always have. I say things that most people don’t have the guts to say. Let me know what you think about my poem ‘War’
Soldiers clashing, men against men, weapons firing, death falls upon them, fighting for reasons, reasons they’ve forgot, men falling like rag dolls at the fire of a shot. Murder, mayhem and destruction, is this the world that man has constructed? Man has no right to rake the life of another, we were born equal, sister and brother”

I love the interconnections that occur through meeting with and chatting to like minded folks throughout the course of this project #punkgirlsbook A few years ago in Melbourne I had the chance to photograph @celphone whose band at the time #RuleOfThirds I had been following. I just received a wonderful Zine that Celeste contributed to called Radiation. It explores this interconnection between femme identifying people in the scene and is such a great read. All profits go to #sistersinside an org that advocates for women in the criminal justice system. Here’s a hobby of mine. Making a list of all the great Aussie femme punk. It is by no means exhaustive and is a work in progress. Something I started as a reaction against those viral best Aussie punk band lists you see crop up every now and then that include No female identifying punks.
