Since I wore Zhen Ji this weekend, here is a closer look at the construction of the costume!
Zhen Ji from Dynasty Warriors 8:
I made this costume as part of my collaboration with #BERNINA @berninausa as Expert for the B590 sewing / embroidery machine launch. That meant learning all the crazy awesome functions of the machine and the digital embroidery studio and applying them to this costume.
This is some of the cleanest sewing I’ve ever done, y’all! I learned sooooo much.
The base dress is silk taffeta with a polyester lining, boning and invisible zipper closure. It’s heckin’ fitted and sturdy and still fits me like a glove ✨.
The main attraction is of course the gold Phoenix emblazoned all over the dress, which I drew out on paper, scanned in and transformed into 18 separate embroidery designs with the help of Bernina. We then stitched out all the designs on the B590 in embroidery mode, with my gold @cosplayfabrics metallic fabric as the base. That alone took a couple of weeks, but once the designs were embroidered, I cut around the edges and turned them into appliqués! To ensure perfect placement, I hand-sewed each appliqué onto the dress before applying the lining, and to this day they look and hold up perfectly. This project showed me that you can literally make any design with any fabric on an embroidery machine !
I also made the bolero jacket with the gradient sheer sleeves and ruffle collar, the feather pieces in her hair and on her hip, and decorated the shoes with more appliqués, this time glued on.

Dynasty Warriors has always been costume porn to me and it was so cool to make a costume from the series and really lavish all the sewing techniques into it. I really loved working with Bernina and learning so much about the B590 which I still use heavily to this day!
Now that cons are starting up again, I’ll surely bring Zhen Ji to more events since she is very comfortable to wear and packs fairly small! (I need more costumes like her!)
