angel on the operating table
[ID: a digital painting looking down on four surgeons operating on an angel. the angel has eyed rings for a head and two sets of white feathered wings. its body is mostly not visible in this scene, because it’s obscured by the working surgeons, but its body appears to be composed of red veins or nerves. Yuletide 2021 recs
Here are my favourite stories I happened to read in this year’s collection. As always, they’re loosely grouped by canons or themes. Nothing too long this time: the shortest one is a drabble, and the longest ones are 5-7K. A lot of tasty worldbuilding, and a few shippy fics sprinkled in.
Check out my previous Yuletide rec posts here.
blorbo brain is literally so funny I love it bc you’ll listen to a song you like and be like “omg this is literally blorbo” and then make your besties who think of blorbo the same way you do listen to it and they’ll be like “omg this is literally blorbo” whole time the song is not about blorbo and if you made anyone else listen to it they’d be like “wtf this is not blorbo you guys are insane” but it’s blorbo

[I.D.: a very round frog with stubby limbs covered in dirt sits in a white bowl of dirt with a tiny cricket in front of it. The frog has its mouth open and tongue stuck out and the sounds typed above make it seem as though the frog spit the cricket out because it was gross. /End I.D.]
that unapparent summer air in early fall
the quiet comprehending of the ending of it all
[id: a digital illustration of a person lying in tall grass. The grass is bright red, drawn in large rough brushstrokes. The person is uncoloured, lying on their side, their head resting on their hands. They have long hair, red eyes (matching the grass), and a shellshocked expression. The writing reads, “there it is again / that funny feeling”]
Felt at least three emotions today about Harrow getting to see a planet full of life and greenery, so i sketched this out in a feverish haze.
Better
that one day she wakes to find
all memory gone, so that she might inhabit
this new body perfectly, wanting
what she’s always wanted: a whole self
without any sense of loss, even as she knows
loss would always have come for her.—Paisley Rekdal, from “Io,” Nightingale
Coronabeth and Ianthe
[ID: A drawing of Coronabeth and Ianthe from The Locked Tomb. Coronabeth is a thin person with tanned pale skin, long wavy golden blonde hair, and purple eyes. She wears a white blouse with ruffled sleeves, a white bow in her hair, blue rings, gray bell bottom pants with a gold trim and an embroidered Roman numeral 3, and a rapier belt. Ianthe is a thin person with very pale skin, long straight blonde hair, one blue and one purple eye, and a gold bone arm. She wears a blue slip dress, a netlike gold necklace, a gold ribcage corset, gray tights, and gold pumps. There is a blue translucent shawl tucked around her forearms. Ianthe smiles and sits perched on a windowsill. Coronabeth is turned towards Ianthe, looking over her own shoulder and smiling at the viewer. There is a gold skeleton border around them. The bottom reads: “Three for the gleam of a jewel or a smile.” The second image is a closeup of the Tridentarii. End ID]
“He doesn’t get distracted,” said Camilla, as if this had caused difficulties in the past.
