On March 13th of this year, @stephysalcidosentan ask in regarding some details on the ever-skittish plague doctor in-training Quinn, and amidst the selection of facts provided was one that would wind up being relevant in due time…
Today’s the day, fellow doctors.
While not the day that I first designed Quinn— which was September 4th, for those keeping track— today is Quinn’s in-universe birthday, and I just HAD to draw something commemorating one of my favorite OCs!
Though, it was a little difficult for me to settle on what exactly I wanted to draw at first. My initial plan was to do a simple bust shot of Quinn in a party hat (Rather, with a party hat on his beak… it’s still a cute idea I may one day bring to fruition), though I had just drawn Quinn in his entirety a month back, and wasn’t really keen on drawing something too identical to it.
But then I remembered that last year on the first of this month, I had drawn a Quinn icon, and while I don’t think I ended up using it here on tumblr (Because @breakbeat-solitare had already designed me an icon for October), it was the perfectopportunity to remake it to better fit Quinn’s current design iteration while also giving me a chance to use it!
It’s the boy! Drawing Quinn is just SO much fun— even if it’s a bit challenging to get his beak to look just right (The specific curvature is key), I find that he’s one of my more visually appealing OCs and I’m just so excited to finally have him as my icon this October!
With the arrival of September at last, we’re now closer than we’ve ever been to the spook-tastic month that is October! It was around this time of last year that my love for plague doctors really began to blossom, too; even though I had designed her in July, I didn’t get around to showing my first plague doctor OC, Patricia Ravenwood, until mid-August.
But this post isn’t about Patricia, as her time to shine was back in July when I celebrated the one-year anniversary of her initial design. Now, a one-year anniversary of my other plague doctor character’s initial design is upon us, because on September 4th of last year, my very own plaguesona Quincy T. Page was conceived…
And now he’s back just in time for Autumn, sporting a new look!
It shouldn’t come as much surprise that Quinn is one of my favorite characters, which is exactly why I leapt at the chance to get to draw him for the one-year anniversary of when I first drew him! Since Quinn’s first outing, he’s had a few minor changes in his design here and there, the most prevalent of which (That I find, at least) being the super curved beak on his mask.
But I couldn’t help but feel like that his design was… missing something. Don’t get me wrong, I was really happy with the original version of Quinn’s look when I first drew him, but I felt as though there could be a few touches-up that could be made to really make him stand out.
Enter Quinn’s hair! The addition of Quinn’s hair is the single most obvious change between this iteration and the previous, and what’s interesting about it is that it started out as a mere test. In a previous post that detailed all kinds of Quinn trivia, I noted that he has fluffy, copper hair when he isn’t wearing his mask and balaclava.
I mentioned having a sketch of a maskless Quinn drawn, which ultimately featured what his hair looked like, but other than that, I continued to draw masked Quinn with a balaclava that concealed his hair… until I wondered what he would look like with the mask and without the balaclava.
So, I took to MS Paint and whipped up a quick concept doodle of what it would look like, and I fell in love with the result immediately. I knew right away that this would be Quinn’s definitive look from then on, and all that was left was to wait until the next time I drew him to put the concept I had drawn to good use!
You’ll notice that Quinn’s mask in the above doodle has a noticeably straight beak, and that’s only because I couldn’t get the curve to look right as I drew the whole thing by mouse. However, you’ll also notice the addition of some smaller details on his mask, which I’ve included in his final design to a greater degree!
And finally, the last change I gave Quinn were the lazy daisy patterns (As suggested by my wonderful mentor @plague-doctor-queer!) on the blue fabric highlights on his robe. Originally, this design was exclusive to the fabric stripe on his hat only, and that’s merely because I had a little trouble getting the pattern to look right anywhere else, but once I learned how to use the material dialog in Medibang, it made it a whole lot easier!
It was really wonderful to get to draw Quinn again, and with how wonderful he ended up looking, I do intend on drawing him a whole lot more in the future! I hope you’ve enjoyed his new design and the deep dive detailing the process of it!
