“The reason we start with Rebecca is all rooted in George Roy Hill starting on those long close-up shots of Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, ‘cause he was an unknown Broadway actor, but George Roy Hill wanted to let people know that yes, [Paul Newman] is in here, don’t worry, but this guy is in the movie too. So, this show is about Rebecca, even though it’s called ‘Ted Lasso’, in my opinion. The first season, certainly.“  - Jason Sudeikis

“I had this picture in my head of what Rebecca looked like, more just in essense, like an aura, and I walk in, and see who we know now as Hannah, and I saw Rebecca. I saw Rebecca first, and then I got to meet Hannah.” - Jason Sudeikis

image

HANNAH: Were you thinking, “She’s a giant!”

JASON:No, I didn’t think that. I mean, we talked about it that day. I remember you being sort of surprised that I didn’t comment on it. I think I said, “It wouldn’t bother Ted. It doesn’t bother me.

“You get little glimpses or an eye flutter of it as early as episode one. When Ted says to her, “Oh, yeah, I heard about that. How are you doing?” — knowing that this was going to be a longer-running thing — it allowed me to give a smile, but an acknowledgment of somebody being so direct to her. In my head, that is literally the first moment anybody had checked in with her. I was glad that, in the edit, that came across. That slight startle.” - Hannah Waddingham

“I knew when playing that scene we’d go to Rebecca’s face after Ted asked to have to sit with it. Sometimes you put that in the script and other times you don’t, but you just know it editorially.” - Jason Sudeikis

image

“I do think Rebecca likes him very early on, and that gets in the way. She didn’t think her plan through. She saw this guy online and thought, What an idiot, let’s get him to destroy the club. She didn’t think she would actually have chemistry and empathy with this person.” - Hannah Waddingham

”She stops weaponizing him early on, like, when she gets to know him, basically after [episode] 4, it’s no longer [that].“ - Jason Sudeikis

"Rebecca finds things that she respects Ted for far earlier than people think.” - Hannah Waddingham

INTERVIEWER:When you look at [Ted and Rebecca] there’s actually a lot of similarities between them. They’re both dealing with the end of a relationship, they’re trying to navigate heartbreak, and what their sense of identity is outside of what has been their lives for several years. […] Was there a conscious thought about some of the paralels between their journeys with that in mind?

BRENDAN: Yes. […] We will see a little more of why they are kindred and parallel spirits in season 2

“I do believe they are soulmates.” - Jason Sudeikis

“They are ultimately soulmates, in whatever form.” - Hannah Waddingham

image
image

“She realizes that they’re each other’s saviors. She unwittingly has saved his life by bringing him away from his wife and his home life, and he has been brought into her life to bring her strength and sunshine when there was none.” - Hannah Waddingham

One of the things Ted Lasso (the show) does that is interesting to me is look at how characters tell stories about their past.  Entrenched firmly in the present, we only have the stories characters tell about their pasts-not the absolute truth or reality of what happened.  And in many cases, the stories they tell leave us questioning what really happened.  The absolute truth is unknowable to the audience who can’t see what happened and just get the event filtered through how the characters perceived what happened.  Finally, given that these events come out as stories one character tells another, we also see how these events are weaved into stories as a way to provide context and meaning to something that is upsetting and emotionally confusing to them.  While we see numerous characters do this, we see it most often in Ted and Rebecca.  I’ve chosen a story from each of them to look at in detail.

This is great meta and it reminds me that I’ve always found it interesting that Rebecca chooses to tell Higgins the story about her mother, as opposed to anything from her own relationship with Rupert.

Rebecca’s been with Rupert for twelve years, and I bet you, ten to one, that folks have tried to tell her how awful he is to her.  I’m fairly sure that this is what caused the breakdown in Rebecca’s relationship with Sassy.  Look at how truly joyous Sassy is when she’s tearing Rupert a new asshole in No Weddings and a Funeral.  She is savoring every word.  Her eyes are alight.  This is a woman who has wanted to speak for so damn long, but was never able to.  Or never listened to.  But now that Rebecca knows the truth, Sassy can cut fucking loose.

And it’s interesting, because it would have had a much stronger impact if Rebecca had said something like: “Don’t get involved.  When people tried to get involved in my relationship, I shut them out.”  Instead, she chooses to tell a more distant story.

And the thing is, for all that the cycle is repeating itself in this very episode: Paul acted badly, Deborah flounced off, Deborah eventually takes him back, what Higgins can see is that Deborah is still, clumsily, reaching out to her daughter.  She’s still coming to her for help, even if she goes back in the end.

So Rebecca chooses a story that is more distant to both her, and Higgins, that kind of counters her own point.  And that’s significant also, because if we think about it, Higgins did exactly what she advised when it came to Rupert and Rebecca’s relationship.  He said nothing.  And we know how that turned out.

I don’t think Rebecca consciously thinks that Higgins should try to get involved in Beard’s relationship.  But she may not feel the same way deep down.

We open the show with God Saves The Queen because, yes, it’s a great  british song, punk, and all that. But also we’re slowing down and  revealing Rebecca […] now, who is God? Is it Ted? No! It’s love.  Literally she saves herself, eventually, by Ted’s, you know, virtue, by his existence that she had to just keep butting up against.-JS

It was my own fault. Season one, I was meant to be eating the biscuits because there’s a whole thing about eventually—if there’s any spoiler alert here—Ted’s making them. But they didn’t expect me to go at them like a truffle hound because I decided that Rebecca should be like an emotional eater.- HW

There was often no need for me to have biscuits at all, or at least it wasn’t written in, but every time I’m in my office, there’s some. And I like the fact that it looks like Ted’s already visited the room that morning, it’s just a constant, it’s her emotional crutch, especially when it comes to guys.- HW
