#reblogging for the comment
Amber Apologists have been claiming that the diagnosis of histrionic PD is mysogynist, and so should be discounted. At first, my rebuttal was “just because something has roots in sexism doesn’t mean that the definitions have not evolved since then”. Still, it did concern me, because it seemed like the argument could be made.
I was concerned about this, so I reached out to my old psych professor who immediately cleared things up and alerted me to the error.
I’m not going to bash Amber apologists for not knowing this, because I didn’t know either. So if you see someone using the “Histrionic is sexism” argument, please respectfully let them know that it isn’t the same thing.
Histrio= Latin word for actor
Hystera= Greek word for womb
Let them know you can see how the error could be made, because honestly, it’s easy to mix up homophones.
It used to be called Hysterical not Histrionic. They changed the name and kept the misogyny. The symptoms of HPD are often just… Women behaving in ways that are considered heightened feminine behaviours and most of the people diagnosed are women.
You can find multiple peer reviewed and published essays about the issue of HPD, some people arguing that it does not even exist and those that talk about the inherent and inextricably misogynistic history of the diagnosis.
Perhaps you could pass them onto your professor as this is about more than modern etymology.
