Private George H. Ruth of 104th Field Artillery, N.Y. National Guard, May 28, 1924. They wanted to use him for a recruiting poster. At 6'2" he was too big for any ready-made uniform and the Guard had to make a special one for him. Whether he actually served is unknown.

As I was telling a good girl today, the idea that everyone should be strong and independent is just capitalist propaganda. Independence uses up more resources. If everyone tries to stand on their own, they are forced to rely on time saving methods or basic necessities that cost more for their convenience.

Even worse, those that struggle because they weren’t made for independence, weren’t made to lead themselves, are forced to cope in ways that are damaging to them.

Stop relying on yourself and stuff. Find someone to help you. A community together is stronger than any one person. It’s only through division that you’re left too weak and exhausted to resist and live the right life for yourself.

Don’t give in to the propaganda. Follow your Joyful Path. Join the Community.

It’s not like you really enjoy making all those choices, do you? How many times do you start your day excited to pick out what you’re hoping to wear?

When was the last time you were happy to be choosing between two laundry detergents at the store?

How many times have you been unable to decide what to do so you spent half an hour trying to find something to watch on streaming?

You’d be much happier just having me choose for you. Don’t think about it. That’s just you in the habit of trying to choose.

Instead, get on your knees and tell me how ready you are to surrender your free will to me. Do it now. You’ll be happier. Trust me.

… and Judy is politely asking you to join the ZNN Crew.

·

Well, okay, not really. But we – that is, the ZNN Staff – would be Joyful if you join us! We need motivated and talented volunteers to keep this operation afloat. That is where you come in!

Due to real life factors and more, there has been a severe drop out of folks who simply can’t manage the time commitments necessary for continual volunteering for ZNN. So they have had to bow out as we sent them on their way with our thanks for the jobs well done that they did.

However, this has left big gaps in our teams and if the content being produced from ZNN has become a bit stale of late, and/or we haven’t been keeping up on the latest news that has been released weeks ago, then this is why. We simply do not have enough personnel to keep up with the demand of the news flowing for our Zootopia community.

·

So we need people for a wide variety of roles within ZNN:

Content Creators who will write articles…

Abyss Gazers who will read fanfictions…

Treasure Hunters who will spelunk for new art and comics…

Translators who will Englishify non-English fancomics…

Multimedia Wizards who will edit/manipulate video and audio…

Social Butterflies who will post ZNN contents to social networks…

Artful Dodgers who will be on-call to do some artsy stuff…

·

Interested? Want more details on each role above? Then go ahead and check out the full role descriptions and the how to apply on ZNN:

.

Help us out, folks!

(And yeah I composed this post – I’m a Social Butterfly for ZNN now )

“it is a wonder that men selected and packed off to war in this way … should ever have stood their ground at first musket fire.” - Stephen J. Stearns, ‘Conscription and English Society in the 1620s’
.
The historical record focuses much more on men who were forced to fight in the wars of the 17th Century than those who volunteered willingly, and so the view of military service in the Civil Wars is usually a negative one. This seems obvious in view of the account of the desperation that could drive one man to cut his own throat or another to cut off his own toe to avoid service. Men seized by recruiting partiesn for both sides were herded together and imprisoned before being marched off for minimal basic training and almost certain injury or death — the time-lapse between recruitment and action could be as little as three days. Desertion was a constant problem for armies relying on impressment, particularly Parliament’s “newly modelled” army, which was perennially short of both men and pay. Stories of almost half the impressed men who fought at Naseby fleeing the field or deserting soon after paint a vivid picture of unwilling recruits, unprepared for action. This image is sharply contradicted by reports from European sources, who noted English hardiness in war, and praises English and Scottish armies for their courage and resilience. As always, every soldier had his own story and this moment in history between the 'patronage’ armies of the medieval period and the professional armies of the late 17th Century onwards reveals so much about the many and varied reasons why men would march to war.
