When a disabled person says “I can’t do that”, the best thing you can do is believe them. It isn’t negative, weak or wrong to know, accept and respect your limits. It’s actual an integral part of living a decent live as a disabled person. So don’t try to encourage us to ignore and disregard our limits and boundaries in the name of “supporting us and being positive” cause there’s nothing supportive about not respecting our needs!
Furthermore, if you’re disabled and you’re used to hearing this and then caving into their demands, it’s okay to start saying no. It’s okay to hold a place for your own health and needs in your heart and prioritize yourself. In fact, it’s vital.
It can be a hard habit to change. In fact, if you’re anything like me, after 30+ years of it, you tend to gaslight yourself faster about this than anyone else around you can. Give yourself the grace to let this defense mechanism go and start listening to your body.
