LIVE

The Tale of Despereaux is so lyrical, it’s meant to be read out loud.

I finished rereading(?) Maniac Magee,

First of all, the only thing I remembered from the book was Cobbler’s Knot and I was convinced it was at the end of the book, but it’s only at the end of the first part, so now I’m wondering if I actually read the whole thing the first time or not.

Secondly, Jerry Spinelli’s writing about family and inner feelings was as amazing as it always is (except for Stargirl, but I think if Stargirl were actually the main character it would’ve worked).

The race plotline, however, was too much. It was too much for the book. At the same time, I don’t see the book working without the split town and Maniac going between them.

It was also awkward at best because you can really tell that Jerry Spinelli is not Black.

Gosh, Jerry Spinelli’s writing is so great.

Books I Read in 2022

Re-read, Re-review:

Almost exactly three years later, I still enjoyed this and don’t feel the need to change my rating. This time around, I picked up even more on the strange pacing and thinness of some of the world-building; the apparent climax of the main plot comes early and somewhat unexpectedly, in a blink-and-you’ll miss it moment of action. Then what should be a simple denouement takes a long, long time to wrap up the book. It feels as though the political intrigue is the barest excuse to have a book where people hide out in the wilderness and face injury and death, and also fall in love. Which, I want to stress, is not necessarily a bad thing, because Katsa is still an interesting character and Po is still a darling. If anything, I liked Bitterblue even better upon rereading, so the final two Parts of the book were no hardship. But that first one still feels weak in comparison, and the Council a weak conceit that doesn’t really stand up to what the story asks it to be.

logarithmicpanda:

I don’t know about you, but I’ve read a lot of meh books recently, so I’d like to start the new year with a bang and actually reread as many old faves as possible in january! Tag your posts with #rereadathon22 if you want to join :D

Here are some very much optional prompts for pics and stuff:

  • Jan 1st: TBRR pile
  • A book you discovered in 2021
  • A book from your childhood
  • A book you’ve meant to reread for more than a year
  • A book a friend made you discover
  • A graphic novel
  • A novella
  • A poetry book
  • An absolute favorite
  • A book you’ve reread more than five times
  • Jan 31st: Wrap up

Ooooo, sounds comforting, and my yearly book backlog is getting short enough that I just might do this. I’ve been meaning to reread the original Graceling trilogy before I finally get to Winterkeep, which I was all excited about until “new” books entirely fell off my radar again while I caught up on backlog and unfinished series.

To wit: I did not read a single thing in 2021 which was nominated for the Goodreads awards. I’m not sure that I read any 2021 releases at all.

Anyway, point is, rereading is good, I’m in (at least a little bit.)
