Through the Mist Week Four

I don’t know if you noticed but I created a masterlist for my Through the Mist posts. It’ll have the universes categorized and when I start continuing the stories you can go back and find the first part to refresh. But back to this week, last time we went into the world of DC comics and this week we are going into the world of Star Wars. So I hope you enjoy.

It was hot, but it was always hot on Tatooine. The twin suns in the sky were baring down on the unforgivable sand. The scorching winds picked up the particles of dust and left the world in a yellow haze. I pulled the scarf tighter around my face as my speeder skipped across the sand dunes. The last thing I needed was to be coughing up sand for the next month. Finally, from the rising dunes the bustling city of Mos Espa appeared from the sand. Dome-roofed, adobe buildings baked in the sun, it looked like a great, twisting snake, hunkered down to escape the heat. The city had faced it’s trials. After the failed mining colonies, the unrelenting rule of the Jabbas, to the invasion of the First Order. But, the war was over and the city still managed to get by.

I entered the city and parked outside a bar, The Hourglass. Usually people would lock down their speeder as this wasn’t the greatest part of Mos Espa. But people knew better than to mess with me.

I entered the bar and was hit with the smell of sweat and smoke. I nodded to the bartender who tilted his head towards upstairs. The boss was waiting. I peeled off my head scarf letting my faded brown braid spill down my back. People eyed me nervously and gave me space to pass, forgetting the music in the background they were dancing to. I skipped up the stairs and into the office.

“You’re late, Atarah.” Was all he said.

“You know being on time was never really my thing.” I sank into a chair relishing in the cool leather against my back.

“You made a mess in Mos Eisley.” He said not turning his chair around to face me.

I pulled off my knapsack and tossed it on his desk. “You told me steal this shit, so I stole it. You neglected to mention who exactly was guarding it.”

“I wasn’t aware you were scared of some Jedi.” He finally spun his chair around.

Auden Thayer was no man to mess it. He was tall and built with a long scar racing down his right eye. Leading right to the silver metal that had replaced his real eye long ago. His hair was short and shaved on the sides and the color of salt and pepper. His beard was trimmed close to his face giving him a clean but stern look. After the war he had taken over the underground operations of Tatooine. Everything went through him. Slaves, drugs, booze, weapons, assassinations. Everything.

He opened my bag pulling out the trinkets one by one. There was a handful of kyber crystals, a cube looking thing, a couple lightsaber parts, old text books that were in a language I didn’t understand, and a load of credits. He rolled one of the crystals between his fingers smiling.

“How’d you get past the Jedi?” He asked putting the stuff back in my bag.

“Wasn’t hard a few good placed bombs and running really fast.” I shrugged spinning side to side in the chair.

He picked up the cube looking thing and examined this. “I don’t understand what this is. It wasn’t on the list.”

I bit my lip. I don’t know why I grabbed it. It didn’t look too valuable just a box with bronze lines that was a turquoise color. It looked like a cheap kids toy. But when I saw it, I don’t know I had felt this weird buzzing in my chest. When I picked it up I swore it started to glow. I had dropped it in my bag before it could do anything else.

“I don’t know I was just grabbing stuff as fast as I could.” I said. “Must have grabbed it by mistake.”

“Well it’s worthless.” He tossed it to me and it landed in my lap. “Keep it as a souvenir.

I quickly shoved it in the pocket of my jacket. Praying it didn’t start glowing again.

"Well you did good kid.” He flicked his hand signalling he was done with me. “Grab a bite to eat and for god sake take a shower. It looks like the entire Dune Sea is stuck to you.”

I huffed leaving his office without so much as a goodbye. I walked next door to the hotel. I dragged myself up the stairs to my pathetic room. It was one room with a bed in the middle. There was a shower behind the door to the left. My window was a view of the street below. I peeled off my clothes leaving them in a pile on the floor. I dropped my gun and staff on the desk. I picked up the jacket and carefully pulled out the cube. I held it in my hand tracing the bronze outlines carefully.

Then the box began to glow and lifted off my palm. The corners twisted making the box into a beautifully complicated shape. If that wasn’t weird enough a voice spewed from the box.

“My name is Rey Skywalker and if you are hearing this we are in desperate need of your help.”
