Roberto Ferri (b. 1978) is a contemporary Italian painter inspired by European classicism. Ferri inflects the tenebrism of Caravaggio and Gentileschi with touches of surrealism and the macabre. Though Ferri’s style is impressively academic, he is notable for his ability to seamlessly blend sacred and profane themes. In the sea of biennial-hopping doodlers and dilettantes, Ferri stands out not only for his technical skill, but for his engagement of history (a rarity these days). In short, I really dig it.
