they’re playing royal feast on the chinese channel dubbed in cantonese, which is surprisingly fast? It was a highly anticipated drama, and yanxi palace did great in hong kong too so I guess this pace makes sense but the gag is… the drama is not good. I gave it a fair chance I really did. I watched 38 out of 40 episodes, and I don’t even know how it ended but it got sooooo fucking boring for me. I think it’s because undoubtedly it WILL be compared to yanxi palace even if the entire plotline is different, and as much as I like wu jingyan and xu kai as actors I don’t think they suited these roles well. I especially do not think xu kai pulls off an emperor role, like maybe a general or a commander in chief but not an emperor. he’s just a little too boyish. It was a big production clearly, and I’m sure it did fine… nothing close to the calibre of yanxi palace, but they did the food premise of it justice I will give it that.
I thought it would be a drama set mostly in the imperial kitchen, but the trailers for Royal Feast makes it look like the typical palace romance between a maid turned empress (Wu Jinyan) and the future emperor (Xu Kai).
