Sibling Swap Sleepover

“You’re lucky Mokie.” Brunhilde said while they hung out in the Kaiba’s Game room. A slice of heaven as She often called it. Her favorite place to hang out with her best friend/partner in crime.

The starling had a few noticeable changes, one of the main one beings she is slightly taller, but also her ears were no longer round. They got slightly pointer as if overnight. This was all result of puberty finally hitting her, but…that didn’t mean it was all good.

“I mean…Technology is way better than magic. We get all this cool stuff like phones, video games, the internet….” She listed off before looking at Mokuba. “And your brother is way cooler than mine. He’s basically a king who made a kingdom despite everything that happened to you two.” Brunhilde said while grabbing a controller to start playing smash.

“….I’d like a brother like that.”

Narce was finding it hard to stay settled as her nest wobbled about. She stood up, walked around in a circle on the yokai child’s head before laying back down.

Minimal arguing and confrontation. Kaiba reminded himself as Brunhilde giggled. She was clearly taunting him with the gibe about Yugi and clearly didn’t know either of them all at. Games and challenges very rarely blurred together for him (one an activity done for amusement, the other a task requiring effort and determination to overcome), for other people on the other hand… well, most were simple-minded individuals.

“Mighty Grouch? Heh, is that the best you can do?” he couldn’t resist taunting in regards to one of the least scathing names he’d heard.

Repositioning herself hadn’t worked as Narce could no longer get comfy amongst the ruffles of purple hair. But she knew where she would be able to settle with no issues and so took flight.

“My ‘demands’ are simple…” Kaiba stated without even reacting to the tiny dragon landing on his shoulders and flopping down so her tail and head hung at either side of his neck. “Stay out of my room,- that includes my adjoined dressing/bathroom,- my office, the entire basement level and pool. Everywhere else is fair game for hiding, just be respectful towards my property… So, do we have a deal?”

“Thanks again.” Timaeus rubbed the back of his neck grateful for the others help when he’d told them something had come up and he needed to get home, but as far as he could find there wouldn’t be any flights for awhile abd ut would ready be a long flight as it was.

Not to mention then having to grab a boat to get to the little island as it had no airport of any kind.

“You don’t have to come all the way, my mána will be meeting me at the dock.”

@kaibagirl007

As the lesson progressed, not only did Kaiba find himself taught each of the words and phrases he’d requested, but Timaeus also threw in other useful things for him to learn too. A couple of the phrases such as ‘Miláte angliká?’ (Do you speak English?) and 'Pós léte … sta eliniká?' (How do you say … in Greek?) he could see being particularly useful to help communicate,- as well as expand his vocabulary,- if/when his friend wasn’t around to turn to whilst they were there.

Not everything was easy to learn though. One such phrase 'Miláo líğa eliniká' (I can speak a little bit of Greek) got him quite frustrated at not being able to say it correctly. He gave it his best shot, but after a dozen times of his tongue not cooperating to pronounce the exact sounds he was trying to mimic it was beginning to seep through in his tone.

Timaeus must have sensed his frustration as the subject focus was then swiftly moved on to ordering food from a 'kafenio’ (cafe) or 'taverna’ (small restaurant). The 'gyro’ that had been recommended to him sounded okay, so he’d definitely give it a chance when it came to getting something to eat.

“Seems that you’ve covered the basics,” Kaiba commented on his friend’s teachings that he was grateful for. “Not only have you taught me the basic formalities, but also ensured I won’t go hungry or thirsty. Anything else beyond that this is a bonus.”

A glance over the cockpit’s control panel saw that they’d already spent over a couple of hours covering the new language. “Mind if we take a break? You covered quite a lot in such a short amount of time, I need time to process some of it… We’ve got just over five hours before we land. If you want to catch a nap before we arrive, now’s the time to do so.”

“Is this really necessary?” Mokuba asked his brother who was busy preparing a small drone for take-off. “Kissy’s walking to the Game shop, not into the middle of the wilderness.”

“Both of which can be scary experiences for someone so young,” Kaiba shot back as he brought the drone to life and it hovered before them. He tilt the control sticks side to side to test the device’s manoeuvrability and was satisfied with the response he got.

“And you don’t think being followed by ‘this' will scare her?”

“She won’t even be aware of its presence,” Kaiba assured his sceptical brother. “For starters, it’ll always be flying 30m away from her; as you can hear, it operates silently; and I made a tiny adjustment so it has the ability to camouflage itself.”

A flick of the switch he’d added to the remote triggered the tiny holographic projectors he’d placed on the drone and it became practically invisible.

“Okay~… So how do you plan to fly what you can’t see?”

“With these.” A seemingly normal pair of shades were pulled down in place from where they had been resting on Kaiba’s head. “Not only do they make the drone visible, but they also project the drone’s camera footage for me to keep tabs on Kisara.”

Mokuba let out a heavy exasperated sigh. “I know you have fears, Seto, but I don’t think anybody is going to try and kidnap Kissy. Even if they did, you’ve already given her an alarm to activate.”

“An alarm won’t provide me with footage to locate her.”

“There’s a tracking device in the alarm!”

“Which can easily be discarded.”

As frustrated as he was, Mokuba knew there was no talking sense into his brother once his mind was set. The least he could do would be to play along with this charade and hope it didn’t get even more outrageous. “What’s the range on that thing?”

“600m.”

“That’s not going to cover the distance she has to travel.”

“Then I guess we had better get walking,” Kaiba grinned smugly and set off on the same route Kisara had taken.

“It had never even crossed my mind you’d steal from me,” Kaiba retorted defensively as he pocketed his phone. “Break stuff? Maybe. But again that was not my concern. You’re my guest and it would be rude of me to leave you on your own.”

He held himself back from giving a lecture about how he,- being the adult,- was the one responsible for her whilst in his home and how her brothers,- and parents,- would tear him a new one if something were to happen to her due to neglecting that responsibility. She was just a kid after all, she didn’t have the kind of responsibilities like himself and her brothers did in ensuring her safety and well being under their care.

Tonight is meant to be fun. There’ll be no arguing or confrontations. He told himself as Brunhilde began floating over to him. But when she continued to float so they were evenly faced and made her demands, he found himself going back on his words as he refused to be intimidated by her. Okay, scratch that, there’ll be ‘minimal’ arguing and confrontations.

“I said, 'I never turn down a challenge’, not that I 'never back down from a game’. Words have meanings, don’t alter them to suit your agenda of getting your way all the time. If you want to play hide and seek, several rooms will be strictly off-limits. If you can abide by those restrictions, then sure, we’ll play. If not, then it’s a 'no’, and like it or not, it will be the answer you take… So, what’s it gonna be?”

“YAH-soo,” Kaiba repeated the phrase exactly as Timaeus had said it. He found hearing the words spoken phonically and repeating them was the easiest part of learning any language. It would be when it came to reading them as text when it’d become harder to understand, especially with what little knowledge he had of the Greek alphabet.

Goodbye was another easy phrase to grasp, either formally as ‘adio’ or using the exact same 'yassou’ used for saying hello as a less formal farewell. Good morning and good evening were also fairly straightforward, as 'Kaliméra’ and 'Kalispéra’. (so if all else failed, at least he’d be able to greet people)

'Parakaló’ was a little trickier to say with Kaiba’s tongue struggling on his first couple of tries. His third attempt was spoken extremely slowly as he tackled each phonic. By his fourth try, nobody would have known he’d ever struggled with the 'L’ and 'O’ sounds coupled together.

“If you’re teaching me manners, I’m going to need to know how to say thank you as well,” he commented with a self-satisfied smile still present on his face. “Being able to introduce myself wouldn’t go amiss either, as would being able to say I don’t speak Greek/understand what was said. Also, simple things like 'yes’, 'no’, ordering a coffee-” he cut himself off when he released he was getting ahead of himself. “Sorry, Timaeus, I didn’t mean to hi-jack your teaching. Please continue.”

(RP starter for @dragontamer05)

It was New Year’s Eve. A time for fresh starts and looking towards the future with optimism. An occasion Kaiba usually spent hosting one of the annual celebration parties at either Kaiba Land or Kaiba Corp. But not this year. This year he had other plans.

This year, New Years fell on his and Kisara’s scheduled ‘Film Night’, and there was no force on Earth (other than Kisara herself) that would make him cancel on her. Their friendship meant too much to him to just cast it aside for some frivolous party instead.

“You sure you’re not coming?” Mokuba asked one last time as his brother parked their car outside of the Muto’s Game shop where a party was in full swing. “Yugi and the others would love to see you.”

“I’m sure they would, but Yugi knows I have prior arrangments,” Kaiba stated matter-of-factly. Keeping multiple friendships going was hard but he made time for each of them so as not to favour one more than the other.

“Well, there’s no reason Kisara couldn’t come along too.”

Here he goes! Kaiba rolled his eyes tiredly at his brother’s tease. “You know as well as I do that she hates parties.”

A mischievous grin broke out on Mokuba’s face. “She met you a one, didn’t she?”

“Point proven.”

The grin vanished from Mokuba’s face. “That’s negative thinking, Seto.”

“It’s dry wit actually,” he retorted, hoping it wasn’t going to be followed up with further lecturing from his sibling. “Maybe you’ll learn it too someday. Now come on, get out before you make me late for Film Night.”

“What are you watching?” Mokuba asked curiously as he unbuckled his seatbelt and readied his hand on the door handle.

“Some cgi animated trilogy about training dragons or something. Apparently, I’ll like it.”

“Oh, you will,” Mokuba grinned. “Especially the last one.” He opened the car door and stepped out.

“Have fun, Kiddo.”

“You too,” Mokuba waved goodbye. As the car began to drive off, he cupped his hands around his mouth and raised his voice, “Wish Kisa a 'Happy New Year’ from me!”

Will do. Kaiba smiled at the reflection of his brother in the rearview mirror. Now that he was on the road again, he tapped his car’s touchscreen display.

[Text to Kisara]: On my way, be there soon.

“Thanks.” Kaiba took a handful of the party mix Kisara had offered him and munched on it whilst watching the climactic battle. Knowing there were two more sequels to get through,- as was as it being a 'kids film’,- he knew there’d be no way the protagonist and/or his dragon would be killed during the suspenseful sequence, however, he was surprised at the outcome that saw the boy maimed as a result; a happy ending he’d anticipated, the battle consequences he had not. Hmm, clearly I’ve gotten my thinking all wrong in assuming animations talk down to their target audience…

In fact, he’d enjoyed the film, the only real issue being the accents he’d found both baffling and jarring at times. Why were the adults speaking with Scottish accents whilst the kids had American ones (and whatever Hiccup’s was)? They’re Vikings, surely they should have had Scandinavian accents? Or at least all speak with the same kind of accent for the sake of continuity? Ugh, I’m overthinking things again!

As the credits began to roll, Kaiba was about to give Kisara his verdict on the film when she beat him to speaking first. His heart danced a little in response to what he heard; inviting him to sit with her was yet another step taken towards Kisara’s recovery (and theirs?) He waited until she returned with her drink and had sat down again before he relocated himself next to her as the second film started.

Barely a couple of minutes in and Kaiba could already see a slight change of style to make the main characters older/less cartoonish as well as rendering and fluidity improvements within the animation itself. It was very pleasing to look at, so much so that the sequence featuring the protagonist testing out a 'flight suit’ had Kaiba yearning to be flying amongst the clouds himself.

A few more minutes later and the film’s plot became clear for Kaiba to see. It was going to be one of those storylines where the hero was reluctant to fulfil the role expected of them yet would wind up in that very role before the film was through, most likely having their naivety shattered in the process which in this case would seem to be by engaging in war with the dragon-hunters. And in wars, there were always losses…

Discovering the identity of the mysterious dragon-rider took Kaiba by surprise. It wasn’t the identity of the woman herself but rather the bitterness it stirred inside him. Why the hell was he suddenly feeling so resentful towards a fictional character with who he had begun to identify with? Could it be he was jealous of the protagonist being reunited with his 'supposedly dead’ mother? Or was it the fact that the mother had basically abandoned her child for 20 years and there were no ill feelings to be felt?…

The sight of the magnificent white Bewilderbeast (a new favourite dragon!) calmed Kaiba’s mind a little. But not for long. Soon both of the protagonist’s parents were reunited and displayed the most unrealistic forgiveness he had ever seen. His eyes rolled at the far-fetched and ridiculousness of it all before sneaking a sideways glance to view Kisara’s reaction. The contentedness of her face suggested that perhaps he was being too cynical, and therefore he should just relax and not take every little thing so seriously. He returned to watching the film as the dragon-hunters began to launch their attack…

Empty. That was how Kaiba felt after having watched the white Bewilderbeast killed in battle. And as if that wasn’t enough, the protagonist’s father also met his end. Kaiba knew it shouldn’t have affected him like it had,- he’d disliked the man at first but had grown fond of him after the change made towards the end of the first film,- yet the loss of this honourable man (fictional he may be) and the way he’d died was strong enough to stir something inside him…

Kisara’s question was a welcomed distraction from the current Viking funeral taking place on screen. “Sure, I’ll visit the shrine with you tomorrow,” he replied. “Just let me know what time you’d like me to come back over and I’ll be right there.”

Kaiba’s eyes flickered towards the rearview mirror to see his passenger admiring the view. The response he received didn’t really answer anything. He’d been relying on a decision being made for him so that he didn’t inadvertently pick the wrong answer. He didn’t want to impose himself on any kind of family matters that his friend might have going on, yet at the same time, it would just be rude to not accompany his friend to the end of his journey. But if it was going to be his choice…

“I guess I could do to learn some basic phrases,” he admitted. “Greek isn’t one of those languages that I’m fluent in or recognise very well, so I’ll take you up on that offer if you’re serious. We could even start now seeing as we still have over 8 hours to go before we land.”

“Sorry to burst your bubble, Bunny, but I’m pretty sure Seto’s sanity will remain,” Mokuba told his friend whilst his eyes turned to his brother and he softly smiled. “He’s been through things you couldn’t imagine, one night babysitting you isn’t going to faze him…”

If he hadn’t overheard their conversation just a moment ago, Kaiba might have taken some comfort in his brother’s words, but right now they felt nothing short of superficial.

“Besides, he has me to deal with on a daily basis.” The smile on Mokuba’s face grew into a grin that almost matched his friend’s. “Now if he were to deal with us as a tag-team for a day or two-”

“Heh, you two are so full of yourselves,” Kaiba smirked at the mischievous looking duo before him. “As if either of you could ever push me that far.” His attention then focused solely on Brunhilde as she mentioned he could still opt out of the arranged sleepover. A single eyebrow was raised as he asked her, “You think I’m just going to hand you victory?”

“Why does everything have to be a game with you, Seto?” Mokuba muttered under his breath as he rolled his eyes and reached for his backpack.

Ignoring his brother’s ribbing,- that’s all it was, right? - Kaiba continued to speak with his boyfriend’s sibling. “I understood that asking Aqua to move in with me wouldn’t be easy on him or his twin, hence why I saught Yami’s permission in advance of asking. If they want to harmlessly test me to prove my seriousness and find out what I would or wouldn’t do for my Muffin, then so be it. That and I never turn down a challenge-”

The alert on Kaiba’s phone sounded and startled Narce who let out a hiss in response to the disturbance.

“It’s okay, girl, it’s just Roland.” Kaiba pet his dragon’s head with one hand whilst his other checked his phone.

“Is everything okay?” Mokuba asked, knowing it was unusual for the other to contact them out of working hours.

“Yes, he’s just informing me he’s here to collect you and take you to the twins’.”

“He’s what?!” Mokuba exclaimed as he watched his brother type out and send a reply to Roland’s message. “I thought you were going to take me?”

“Normally I would, but the Mercedes is undergoing its shaken, we’re unable to use one of sports cars since there’s three of us and I’ve no intension on leaving our guest here on her own… I’ll be there to pick you up tomorrow. Now get a move on, don’t keep Roland waiting.”

Mokuba pulled his backpack over his shoulder and waved to them both as he left the room. “Have fun.”

[Text to Kisara]: On my way, be there soon.

Kaiba thought the arrangement of Kisara’s floor pillows loosely resembled a nest; a soft curved mound that provided her with both comfort and security, kind of like the pillow forts he and Mokuba used to build at the orphanage. Only back then he’d built the pillow forts as a way to shield them both from the rest of the outside world. Is that what Kisara was doing now? Creating her own space to shield herself from him? Did she even want him there at all?-

No. he told himself once he realised his mind was overthinking things. Kisara’s just making herself comfortable for tonight’s viewing marathon. If she didn’t want me here, she wouldn’t have arranged all this or welcomed me with a hug upon arrival; STOP worrying and watch the damn films!

Without another thought towards his friend and her pillows, he reached for one of the many snack bowls Kisara had prepared for them and began eating as the film started.

At first, he found the protagonist’s voice an assault on his ears,- like nails down a chalkboard,- but the boy’s sarcastic dry humour (amongst other things) helped him warm to the character fairly quickly. Another thing he warmed to quickly were the dragons as each breed was introduced during the opening monologue, the Monstrous Nightmare being an instant favourite closely followed by the Deadly Nadder as the film progressed, whilst the main dragon,- the one he’d once seen on Timaeus’ hoodie,- being too 'cat-like’ for his liking. And the visuals… amazing; yes the characters were stylised in a cartoonist manner but everything else looked very realistic indeed that at times he almost forgot he was watching animation at all.
