Medieval Comics

A Lenten cloth on exhibit at the Liechtensteinisches Landesmuseum, Vaduz, LS

Most people who lived in the Middle Ages could not read, so they used pictures like we use books.
The Lenten cloth from Bendern tells two stories: The top row contains tales from the Old Testament. From the second to the fourth row you can read the story of Jesus.

Panorama put together with Hugin.

Breather hole

An airplane window has 3 panes. The inner and outer ones are basically protective slabs. The middle one has a thin hole in it so that cabin pressure is equalized all through. Depending on how cold it gets outside and how humid the circulated air is inside, little droplets can freeze on the inside of the outer pane. That’s what you are seeing here, lit by the rising Sun somewhere over Wales.

Hans Waldmann

Statue of Burgermeister Hans Waldmann, Swiss General and Statesman. A crucial figure in the fall of the the Duchy of Burgundy and the rise of the Swiss Confederacy that irrevocably altered the face and fate of Europe. One does wonder whether it was inevitable that the Swiss and the Burgundians should have clashed so existentially, whether Europe wasn’t big enough to hold both of them, could they have co-existed.

An early 20th-century construction, placed on a huge pedestal in the Münsterhof plaza outside the Fraumünster, Zurich.
