Kyoto Station: the west end .. [5 / 5]

Kyoto is famous for its temples, oases of quiet contemplation. But one of the most spectacular structures you will see there is the Japan Rail Station building, which at first glance looks completely alien to the culture of Kyoto, but is really a mammoth modern take on the same principles. It is cavernous, a hollow enclosure defined by a skin of steel mesh, and the higher you climb out away from the busy platforms, the calmer and more contemplative it becomes. Kyoto, Kansai Prefecture, Japan.

It is impossible to take a good photo of it, because it is a truly experiential space. But like all things Japanese, there are often sightlines and narrow areas of focus that stand out. I am showing one such here, a view down into the cavern from the top of the Daikaidan stairs (visible at image right).

Look at the world with a toddler’s mind, look down, and decorative rocks outside the farmers’ market embedded in the grate to the emergency access on above the Blue Line.

You never know the wonders you find in your own backyard.

Had fun yesterday just spending an hour taking pictures and filming videos in my backyard. Nothing better than just spending time with my camera on a Friday evening.
