I went to pax south this year with my fam, max and dante, and they didnt notice the thing i did
The night before leaving San Antonio, I realized I had been completely surrounded by hordes of Straight people for many days and needed to find some of my Queer folks! And while, that didn’t happen, I did find my Gays! Which is close enough!
I Googled a list of “Gay Bars”, which showed me the rough boundaries of the Gayborhood in San Antonio. And after getting tasty curry bbq, I walked towards it.
This was the first place on my list, and I immediately thought it was well and completely abandoned and closed down. So abandoned in fact, I thought it looked like a fantastic ruin of a gay bar. So I spent about 15 minutes just circling the place taking photos!
It wasn’t until I got to the parking lot side (I approached from the rear) - (settle down now!) that I saw the trucks and thought maybe it was actually open for business after all!
And after wondering exactly how bad and dangerous an idea it might be to go inside, I just opened the door and did it!
And was immediately rewarded by the most delightfully old school, and warmly welcoming, neighborhood gay bar!
Just a few folks sitting around a central square bar. And jukebox playing great 80s/90s music!
The whole bar joked around easily and I joyfully settled in to the banter! I had a lovely and wide ranging conversation with a local seated near me, which was easily the longest conversation I’d had all week, and very, very nice.
If you’re ever in San Antonio and need some good old fashioned Gay Bar atmosphere, in a chill neighborhood bar type place, I cannot more strongly recommend a visit to the Cobalt Club! And say hi to Jordan the bartender for me!

I had incredibly good coffee this afternoon at a Texas-local small chain called Summer Moon. They make their own sweet cream. And the beans are roasted over a woodfire.
Really well balanced, with nice sweetness and bold coffee notes!
Also the staff were really nice! They guy WHO took my order wrote my name in careful cursive. And the assistant manager was sooooo sweet and smart and gave me a bunch of really exciting music suggestions!!

I honestly just ate one of the best meals I’ve had in a while. Definitely the best meal I’ve had in San Antonio. And I’ve had some really good meals.
But Curry Boys BBQ is something else entirely!!! A fusion of Thai Curry and Texas BBQ! I had “The Brisket Smokeshow” and HOLY WOW!!! It was a flavour explosion all up in my greedy mouth!! (Yeah, yeah, I know, settle down back there.)
I had to keep taking breaks just to savour each bite and stretch the experience out!
If you’re in San Antonio; heck, if you’re NEAR San Antonio, make the trip to Curry Boys!!! Cause, damnnnnnnn!!! Good food is GOOD!!

So, of course I went and got myself some tasty BBQ!!!! Despite my good friend Toby’s very strong and repeated recommendation of, “This really good vegan place!” And while, I do like some tasty vegan goodness; when I’m in Texas, I’m gonna eat some meat!!! (Sorry Toby!)
And the meat was indeed good. Brisket, pork ribs, cheese and jalapeño sausage, all deliciously smoked! With bacon Mac and cheese, cheesy jalapeño rice (Which was recommended) and obligatory potato salad! (What? I’m wicked freaking Irish kid!) Washed down with sweet tea!

I’ve been included in the last Rivista Ufficiale NBA roster (today in the newsstands) to be one of the ten illustrator depicting the most influential player of these years. I purposely chose Tim Duncan, probably one of the less loved players around and yet a great champion on the court as well as in life.
